Subject: 3.9l Porting and Polishing
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone out there had ever ported and polished the heads on their 3.9l dakota before or even a 3.9l in general... I was wondering this because I was planning on porting and polishing the heads on my "99' Sport 2wheel drive 5 speed reg cab w/3.9l V6 Magnum" in the next couple of weeks and the guy who is going to be helping me said that these "newer" vehicles pretty much had about the max flow allready designed into their engines... I'm assuming that I could expect to see a few extra horses at the least anyhow... Were also going to be shaving .015" off of the heads as well with the new valve seat refacing...

A few questons are what kind of hp and torque can I can expect out of this??? Will this help more with the mods I've allready done??? Will this help or hurt fuel milleage??? I allready run mid octane gas, so will I need to run Premium with this minor shaving???

Mods allready are as follows ---

Cold Air Intake
Tornado
Helix Bore Throttle Body Spacer

Mods allready ordered and going to be on it this next weekend are as follows ---

+20hp chip "suppost to trick computer into thinking incoming air is colder and in turn delivers more fuel"
Holler dual 52mm "5.9l" throttle body

And possibly while I'm into it "roller rockers with roller tip only so I won't have to change shafts"

So what can I expect from this???

Better, worse??? Anyone ever dynoed out anykind of mod like this or done a flowbench on before and after the porting and polishing???

And before anyone replies I just want to think everyone for any of the responses regarding this...

Thanks,
Greg

Make sure you compensate on the intake manifold for whatever you shave off the heads or else it won't fit right.

I'm glad you brought that up because that never even crossed my mind... I was planning on porting and polishing my intake as well a little though, but the shaving never crossed my mind as interferring with anything... How would I go about making up for the difference exactly, shave intake as well or port open the intake to where it would work right... I did also remember to think about the valve stems and lifters, but not the intake itself...

This just goes to show why you should have a few people thinking about things so you don't miss something...

Thanks Again,
Greg

No problem. You would shave the intake. I mentioned it because it is something that people forget. I assume you're having a machine shop do the heads. I would just ask them about shaving the intake as well to match. They'll probably be impressed that you know that. And frankly, it's something they should be asking you about.

Actually I was going to do it myself with a guy who has been doing it for about 30years "building performance racing engines"... He was going to show me the bassics then I was going to do the port and polish myself then he was going to do the shaving... I was going to port the intake in the shop here at the house and do the porting and polishing of the heads at his shop "he has more tools and more know how's", but now I'll make sure to shave the intake as well... Do I need to worry about retimming or anything of that nature... I'm assuming so...

Thanks Again,
Greg

I recommend getting someone who has done it before to help with it, but mainly you just bolt down new gaskets onto your metal parts then mark the area shown within the gaskets and cut that area out... Sounds simple I know, but gets complicated when you start getting into it and there's a lot of things to watch out for like valve seats and guides... As you can tell from previous post I personally am newcomer to the trade as well, but have done minor amounts to smaller engines before...
