Subject: 360 swap?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 98 dak with 318 and 5 speed, and was wondering if anybody knows about a 360 swap? I have been told that the motors are internally balanced, and I would need a 360 flywheel. But as far as anybody knows, dodge never bolted a 360 to the nv3500 5 speed. Will another flywheel fit? Do I even need a different one? Will I need a different tranny altogether? Any help would be appreciated.

The 318/5.2 is internally balanced. The 360/5.9 is externally balanced. The external balance is different on the LA 360 and Magnum 5.9, so you can't mix them. Two avenues to check would be using the flywheel from a 360 Magnum Ram pickup, which used the NV4500. This would be easier than getting a 318 Magnum rebalanced to 360 Magnum specs. Any reputable shop can do this, however, if you went that route. I'd think it'd work fine with the NV3500, but you should check for dimensions. I'll dig around and see. Be sure your 360 crank is drilled for manual tranny shaft. Most Magnums were, but some weren't finished to the proper size. Again, machine shop unless you know how to do this.

Thank you for the info. The reason I was asking, is I want to stroke a 360, and was unsure if I could even bolt it to my 5 speed thank you.

depending on what 360 you are talking about.

mopar sells a flywheel for the LA360,check with
summit or jegs.

the crank can be drilled to except the pilot shaft of the trans if need be

the 5.2/318 probaly has a 10 1/2" clutch disc and
pressure plate with should work with the 5.6/360
LA or mag

the flywheel is your big issue with 360 so its balanced right.[make sure you get the right one forthe right motor]

I plan on going with a magnum, and The 318 has an 11 inch clutch. I have no idea what size the flywheel would be for it though. I found a low mileage 5.9 from a 00 ram at a pretty good price, and was gonna buy it, and stroke it. and hopefully supercharge it. I am trying to get into the high 11's or low 12's and just think it would be much easier to get that much out of a 360 rather than a 318.

It can be done I just completed a stroked 360 into a 1994 dakota sport. It does take a lot of work but can be done. If you have questions e-mail me and I'll see what I can do to give you the info.

Pulling all the stops, a 380hp crate motor will put a 3400lb Duster into the high 12's right outta the crate, but it'd never pass an emissions test in a Dak, so keeping it clean is a challenge, but very do-able.

The swap is much simpilar then what you think. Get a MP catolog. Look at the 360 magnum performance crate engine. It lists all the part numbers that you will need. for the flywheel, harmonic balancer etc. I think in 97 they used the nv3500 in the rams so you could get a flywheel from one of them.

I put a 360 into my 97 with a 5 speed. I had the flywheel from my 318 balanced to work with the 360. A machine shop did this for under $200. I have seen new flywheels for around $500 I think that are set up and ready to go. The rams use the NV4500 with the 360 because NV specs claim the NV3500 isn't strong enough to handle a 360(Main reason why you don't see a manual in the R/T). The NV4500 can handle it, but will not fit into a dak with out some reworking of the floor. If you are going to stroke and blow your engine, from what I have researched, I would recommend you purchase a stronger tranny. You can get by if you'd like to try, but it isn't the strongest and will fail eventually.

I had considered the mopar crate motors, but never really got any good or bad news on them. I know they make a 402 stroker which seems to be about what I am after. I figured that my trans would eventually be ripped out, so hopefully by the time it does maybe I'll be able to afford a tremec 6 speed. I plan on having this truck for a loooong time, and turning it into a money pit, so spending money on it really doesn't bother me. thanks for your help.
