Subject: 3.9 to 4.7 swap

Hey, I was just wondering how hard it would be, and what all would be necessary to put a 4.7 in a 3.9 truck. If anyone could let me know, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks a mil Aaron

Take the truck in to the dealer and trade it in for a new one with a 4.7.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
I am one who is bad at doing the stuff the hard way and even I could immediately say that would be a tall order! You would need a new tranny and all the engine controls to go with it. Plus new drive shaft, mounts, etc etc etc.
Would cost a LOT of money I am sure. With money anything can be done.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 5 speed behind a 3.9 the same tranny that would be behind the 4.7? Aaron

I don't know about the 4.7 tranny compared to the 3.9. I do know that if you just put a 5.2 in then everything would match up perfectly. Why not just get a 5.2?

Because I have heard that the 4.7 is more economical. It's going in a 4x4 club cab 5 speed. I know I'd have to get a different PCM, but what about most of the wiring harness, would it match up very well from the 3.9 to the 5.2?

The 3.9 tranny would bolt up to the 318, but will not handle the power as well the tranny in a 5.2 truck. The 3.9 trans is the ax-15, and the trans in the 5.2 is the (new venture) nv3500 totally different tranny's, but the imput shaft should be the same.

The 4.7 is more economical for the most part, but the 5.2 is worth the difference in many ways. First, you'd feel the power :)
Second, its easier to find replacement and performance parts for without going to the dealer.
Third, both would feel fine in a CC, but if you plan on hauling anything often, then you'll wish you had the 5.2
Last, and most important, everything for the 5.2 and 3.9 is pretty much the same. The tranny and everything mounts up perfectly. I believe you'd need a new computer in both cases, but once again, since the 5.2 is easier to find parts for, you can get one cheap in a salvage yard. With what you'd save in parts during the swap would make up for the gas mileage, plus you'd have the extra power as a bonus.

Just my 2 cents. Either engine is a great choice, but I know when I do the swap I'm getting a 318.

Well, I can't say for certain because I haven't actually done the swap yet, but I think the transmission should be the same. The people who have done the swap say all you need is a new computer and exhaust manifolds. The motor mount should line up. I'm pretty sure you'll need a new intake manifold too. What year is the truck? If its a truck which could come with a 5.2L from the dealer, then everything should be a perfect fit. Hope this helps.

You might want to make a new thread about a 3.9 to 5.2 engine swap to get the attention of people who have actually done this.

For a 5.2 swap, you'd need V-8 computer, engine wiring harness, intake manifold, distributor, and exhaust manifolds. All of this is due to the extra cylinders. The 5.2 is an awesome engine that responds very well to even minor tweaks. You'll easily be able to boost the efficiency of the engine. The 3.9 was derived from the 318, and this continued with the Magnum make-over. The motor mounts will line up. As willing a runner as the 4.7 is, the 5.2 has a perfect rod ratio (even better than the 4.7), and this makes it a willing runner. It loves to rev. As mentioned, it's been around in one form or another (LA, then Magnum) for about 35 years and parts are less costly.

Just finished a 4.7 swap. My truck was a 2000 3.9ltr Quadcab, donor was a 2000 4.7 SLT. You need both front wire harnesses and computers, Engine, transmission, Y pipe and ABS module. Everything bolts right up. I also took the dash and cab harnesses and upgraded my truck to power everything.
Not feel the difference, pffft, the book says 60 HP difference and YOU FEEL IT!!! God why would anyone buy a 3.9ltr new? What dogs...

Congratulations, you made a good choice. I missed some of the nonsense posted about 5.2 vs. 4.7 when this thread was fresher. 5.2 loves to rev compared to the 4.7 ? How foolish is that, with the 4.7's lighter parts and better high rpm power ? Enjoy your 4.7; mine hauls quite well.

Brandon,

Unless you have a parts truck, forget it, too pricey.

1. The 4.7 didn't come with the Dakota in '99.
2. The wiring harnesses are completely different.
3. You need a transmission.
4. You need a PCM and since they didn't make one for a '99...

Put a 5.2 or the 5.9 in. It's a much easier swap.

It would be easier to go all the way with the 5.9. They were
available in the Dakota in '02.
