Hi all,

I just installed a Volant Air intakesystem #26952 on my 2001 QC 3.9L V6. I couldn't get the support bracket to line up with the exhaust manifold bolt and the stud underneath the origninal filter box. It seems secure with the everything bolted together and using the airhat as the only support point. Does anyone have this same problem? Do you think this setup secure enough for everyday driving? Should I attempt to bend the support brackets to fit? Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with my 5.9, I ended up using just one bracket. I have had it on for almost a year and it has not given me any problems.

Should've bought a 360 Air Intakez. No bracket to worry about and 15 hp increase (on my 4.7L) 15 lbs torque, Dyno'd! And a bonus 3 mpg!

I'll ask my previous question here. Hope ya don't mind. I have an 02' quad 4x4 4.7 auto. I posted on a couple of sites and never got an answer to whether or not the K&N drop-in improved mpg. The only info I saw was improved torque/hp. But noone was positive on mpg, stating that they now get into the gas more. Well, I did a pretty controlled test after I gave up waiting for a good answer, puchased a drop-in (also installed!!) and found better performance with a slight increase in mpg (1-1 1/2). So, I will ask a revised question; is the FIPK worth tossing my drop-in. Will I get that much more mpg to justify tossing a $45 filter. I know that K&N hasn't fully developed one yet, but there are others, obviously, and I do have the option of fabrication. BTW, a lot of people are purchasing various pipes to fabricate. Electrical supply houses have long sweep 90's that would be perfect for the application. Long sweep vs standard ell, allows less turbulant flow. They are made long sweep to make wire pulls possible when 'filling' a 3 or 4" pipe. They come in rigid (steel) and plastic. Plastic type are by code, much more heat resistant.
So, anyone that can help me make an educated- this time- decision about whether or not to toss the drop-in for a FIPK type.... please do so.
Thanks
PeeDee

I removed my K&N drop in and made a the homebrew intake from the throttle body,I noticed more HP,and a little better gas m,But you have to keep your foot out of it to see it.It makes your motor sound like a V-8,I don't think you'd be dissapointed, just my 2 cents....

PeeDee,

I started with a K&N drop in and moved to the Volant intake. I didn't see any difference but a lot more air intake noise. After install all my mods, everything work in combination because you would need to eliminate all the air flow bottle necks. If you don't want to make any more mods and you are happy, stick with the drop in. If plan to change the exhaust, TB and headers (I heard your stock exhaust manifolds are pretty good) then going to a better air intake would be helpfull. I went with a CARB approved intake so I wouldn't have problems with inspections. Something to think about if your state has strict inspections. BTW for reliability & idle, change your cap and rotor to brass contacts. 1-1.5 mpg improvement is pretty good. I think I got that when I did the drop in and tonneau cover. Now my foot gets heavier and heavier.

I didn't know if they make a K&N FIPK for 4.7L yet. All they got is the drop in. Thats why I went and checked out 360AirIntakez, Airaid, Z-tube, and a few more. I found the 360 to be the best, Z-tube came in a close second but they had no dyno info and Airaid came in at 3 hp less. 360 also beats Volant by $40 and it looks cooler. Volant claims that their black plastic is cooler than the aluminum models, but hey, black absorbs heat! I drove around in the San Diego desert for a few hours, opened the hood and my 360 was still pretty cool...it also has some sort of ceramic/powdercoating in it that helps keep the air cool. With SpeedTweaks IAT adjuster, 180 thermostat, and a mild TB porting that I did myself, it dyno'd at 253 hp (formulated engine estimate from rear wheel dyno) with 305 lbs torque, although I didn't pre-dyno it, my Dak is 23 hp above the listed 230 hp and 295 lbs torque.

Don't worry about that CARB approval....it takes only 20 minutes to put your stock box(s) back on when its smog time. Get the biggest filter (K&N 9") on the smoothest, coolest bent aluminum tube intake you can find....I like the 360AirIntakez too!
