I have read all through the posts you have made about aftermarket ignitions and spark plugs and coils and wires. But I haven't seen anyone post anything about aftermarket distributors.

In my limited experience with aftermarket ignition setups, I have always bought an aftermarket distibutor to handle the higher electrical requirements of an aftermarket ignition system.

Since I have not seen anyone post about this, can I assume this is because the factory distributors can handle the extra abuse from an aftermarket ignition?

Just curious. Thank you for any thoughts.

What about the
Mallory MAA-4757901?
MOPAR Performance DCC-3690430?
MSD MSD-8534?

But back to my main point, does anybody have any problems with the aftermarket ignition systems prematurely killing the stock distributors on these Dakotas?
If not, then that would be great. One less thing to think about.

Thankyou for correcting me. I'm glad you brought that to my attention.

So back to my ORIGINAL question, has anyone had problems with the aftermarket ignition systems wearing out the factory distributors on a Dakota?

Thats really all I wanted to know.

This would be a question, that i would like answered as well. As far as the whole distributor, i don't think you will need an after market.

The higher voltage would be handled by the cap and rotor. MSD, Accel and others do make a tougher cap and rotor. However, i am currently using a Borg Warner cap and rotor with good success. Only have about 3000 miles on them though.

My current setup:
MSD 6A
MSD Wires 80 ohms-ft.
Accel supercoil (42,000 volts)
spark gap at .055

fastyz400,
on your truck, where did you attach the new coil? and what did you do with the wire harness that plugged into the original one?

Also, did you buy the super coil that was all grey, or the one that is yellow with a grey top?

On my truck the factory one is mounted at the front of the engine on the passenger side.

Thank you very much for your input and previous posts on your other thread. They have been very informative!

kRaSh,

I got the grey one (part 140008), it is mounted near my fender near my stock ignition. Since i have a home made air intake system, it's in the location where the old air box use to be. I like this coil setup much better than where the stock coil is. The stock coil is near all that engine heat. Have you tried touching the stock coil after you ran your truck, it's dam hot. The coil on the fender stays much cooler. Thus, stronger spark. Heat increases the resistance in any coil.

As far as the wiring harness, i used some Napa 2 lead trailer wiring harness. It's water tight and will keep the leads clean. If, you have access to a soldering iron, heat gun and wire shrink wrap, go for it. Oh, buy 2 kits, if you want to ever go back to your stock coil. It just plugs right back into the original coil. They are like $2.34 ea. comes with a mail and female connector.

I can send you some pictures, if you give me your email address.
