Subject: V6 to V8 Swap?s

Hello all,

My 1992 3.9 V6 just ate itself at 180K miles.

I'm not sure why but I've taken very good care of it and it's all highway miles. The cam gear has no teeth left. Looks like the lifters/cam seized up. The engine is full of metal filings...haven't got the heads off yet to see what's up (or down there). I'm thinking it may have been running a can of engine flush that maybe took out a bearing? No more engine flush for me...

Anyway this is what I need info on.

I'd like to drop a 360 in it but I'm not sure about being able to pass Delaware state emissions.

I've found a link for the motormount brackets but was wondering if there is a step by step (or problem by problem how-to-book out there?).

I guess I'll need a new tranny?, new computer?, new fuel/intake manifold/headers etc...not sure what the best crate motor company to buy from...
Maybe junk yard would be better $$$$ wise?

I'm slowly taking the engine apart getting ready to yank it out and am trying to get some good advice from anyone who has done such a project.

The other option and maybe less headaches is going high performance on a rebuilt crate engine V6...BUT I can't find anything highpo for the V6?

I haven't been to a dealership to ask let but there's a conflict of interest there....would rather hear it from someone who's paid the bill(s).

I'm on a budget, just looking for better mileage and performance...AS EASY and least expensive as possible. I've heard the V8 actually does beter than the V6...on mileage.

I have to go change my son's diaper. Appreciate any info at lm2500gasturbines@hotmail.com

Thanks,
Motorhead

Why would you call him a moron, if he is just asking for information? Isnt that the purpose of the board, to give and get information? Isn't asking fellow Dakota owners for informaiton a way of "searching" for information?

Papa Smurf, YOU are the moron. Heh.

92-95 Dak is great for parts because you're grafting Magnum tech to yours.
jd....When the electric fans in my Shelby fried their relay, I set out to remedy that situation. Using a flex fan and a 1 1/2 inch spacer filled the bill. I also took out the stock radiator and used a different one that'd fit into the radiator support frame, effectively moving the radiator forward about 3 inches (directly into the space where the electric fans had been). Nowadays, Summit carries generic aluminum radiators that'll fit that area and do an even better job....very reasonable price too. You can use electric fans if you prefer. I'm looking at a '73 short-shaft viscous clutch 7-blade OEM-style unit as a future mod. If you use the serpentine belt system, that'll save at least another inch of clearance, so it can be done, but not with the stock radiator/stock location. Also, depending on what year your Magnum is, the flex plate may or may not fit. Around 1995, the bolt pattern changed, so you'll need to check that....at worst, you'll need to get the flex plate that fits the Magnum, if it's a later type. Let eBay be your new best friend. I scored a complete pre-96 Magnum wiring harness for less than $30 including shipping. Also, remember that the serpentine system turn the fan and water pump in the opposite direction, so don't mix/match the fans and water pumps from Magnums and LA's.

There is a way to get very good power for fairly cheap. If u have the 360 motor or are going to swap for one, put the heads from a 318 on the 360. This will give it a ton more power. This only works on truck blocks. Also I do have a question , what do the 318 motors put out in torque for the 1994 model, 318 manual 4x2, thanks

MoparMan? What are you smokin'? Put 318 heads on a 360? What? On LA's, 318's have small ports/valves and will choke a 360. The hot ticket is to put 360 heads/intake on a 318. As for Magnums, the 318/360 heads are the same, so swapping produces no power changes. This only works on truck blocks? Care to explain why? It works on ALL LA engines in trucks OR CARS. Torque....300 ft/lbs at 3200 rpm.
