Subject: New R/T owner- Help please :)

Hey guys - I was drving a 94 S-10 4x4, 150k miles. Loved that old truck but she finally started having too many problems. I went yesterday and found a used 02 5.9 R/T at a local dealer here and got out the door with it for 17k. Only 19k miles on the truck, so Im happy with the deal I got. Ive been browsing over the boards here and I could use a little help on some questions I had.

Exhaust - Replace or not? I had dual flowmasters on the S10. (Vortec V6). I seem to see mixed opinions on flowmasters and flowmaster duals for the 5.9 R/T. Whats the best option here? I like the side exit duals look for this truck.

Intake - Cold air. The K&N Kit? Seems to be a popular choice.

Throttle body spacer. These dont work on the 5.9 engines well? I shoupd skip this one?

180 thermostat- A no brainer, right?

And now the things Im really confused on :

M1 - What is this? Actual intake manifold right? I have reservations about this one. The truck still has 60k of powertrain warranty on it. Therefore I dont want to tear into the upper end of the motor. Is this obtained from the Dodge dealer? The 2bbl model is what I need to look at? And would this be something they would install without voiding my warranty?

And the BIG question - The "chip" or PCM. On the chevy it was an easy swap. As I understand it, there is no Mopar PCM available for the 2002 R/T 5.9? What do I do here? I have reservations about paying someone to program it (either the wrong way - or an investment lost of I have to take it in to the dealer for service and the "erase" or overwite the program). Whats the best bet for this?

Also on a budget whats the best order to do these in?

Thanks folks.

As for the exhaust, I'd go with a true dual exhaust. You would get the best gain in hp. There's many combo's you can choose from. It just matters how deep your pockets are. The best true dual exhaust out is the Spintech true dual exhaust and Spintech headers. You will get a HUGE gain in hp from this exhaust

The Intake should be either 360z Intake, K&N FIPK intake, or the Intense Performance Intake

Don't even screw with a throttle body spacer. waste of money! Get a new throttle body. Get the best of the best - F&B 52mm Billet throttle body. Its one of the best ones out and will fit your '02 well

A 180* t-stat is a good mod for being only $10. It can be bought at Napa Auto Parts or online...

The M1 intake is a damn good mod too. It will get you alot of top-end hp. I'd just go with the 2bbl. I'm not sure if it will void the warranty because its made by Mopar..

And get the PCM. Since you have an '02, you want the B&G flash. You basically send your PCM to B&G and they flash it, and send it back. You will notice and huge difference and be very pleased

But here's what I would do if I was in your situation. I'd get all of these in the order as they appear:
1. Spintech headers, Spintech 2.5" exhaust, & X pipe
2. Intake
3. B&G Flash
4. F&B 52mm Throttle Body
5. Mopar 2bbl Intake Manifold

Contact John Mercedes on this stuff. Hiss website is www.southeastrt.com Hope this helped ya!!!

I say you should work on the intake side of the motor before you work on the exahust. The stock RT exhaust is 3in mandrel bent with a performance muffler.

Intake - 360z or K&N

Chip - Superchips - 3 performance programs and it raises the speed and rev. The tuner can also change tire heght for correct spedo and read ODB-II codes. And it is cheaper than a custom flash. 289.00 shipped from 2D's performance.

Throttle Body - Fastman, F&B, APS

M1 - should not cause problems with you warranty. The dealer cannot void your warranty even on non Mopar parts, he has to show that the aftermarket part causes the problem.

Then find another messageboard. try www.dodgetrucks.org or www.dakotausa.com. Since this board does not make you register it gets a ton of retards.

fatmat789- i believe the headers and true dual exhaust you are referring to are actually made by gsmotorsports. they use spintech mufflers though so that might be what your're thinking of. anyhow, ive heard great stuff about this setup on a nearly stock R/T motor if you dont mind dropping a decent amount of money on it. dont mistake this as a flame, just trying get the right info out there. talk to scott quaranta at www.gsmotorsports.com hes a real nice guy and has seriously sweet 2000 club cab R/T loaded with all kinds of goodies.

p.s. if you're worried about sound, go to the section marked for the 4.7 liter exhaust and listen to the sound clip they have, it'll give you an idea of what you're looking at. later.

Be carefull about buying "performance" parts. Shop for them just like you would anything else. Make the seller prove that they will actually do what they say it will. If the seller won't provide test data, don't provide cash.

For example, Spintech does not publish any dyno numbers. Gibson does; but they *could be* slightly deceptive. Before I spend money I want see an actual dyno sheet, done before and after installation of the advertised part(s) ONLY. And the dyno sheet has to match my intended purpose. It's nice that a new TB could add 30 hp. But if it's all above 5,000 rpm, and there's a serious torque drop at less than 3,000 rpm, I'm not interested for my truck.

Spintech might not post dyno numbers on their site but Scott Q has posted plenty of dyno sheets at GSMotorsports.com and the delphiR/T forums. Includes dynos on nearly stock R/Ts or heavily modified R/Ts, and if you talk to anyone with the spintech true duals and GS headers they have nothing but great things to say about them.

I'm not knocking Spintech or GS Motorsports. Looks like they have some quality products. But take a close look at the dyno numbers on the web site. They compare their headers with JBL and Dodge. Their headers and their exhaust clearly make more power than the others all across the power band. But how does the power band compare with bone stock? And what other mods have been made? And what happens if you only install a cat back system, w/o headers? I don't know, it wasn't clear to me from reading the site. Although, I bet if you called them they would send them to you.

Listen to the message and not the words. Be a carefull shopper. Make sure the parts will do what you think/want them to do. Make sure the numbers and comparisons are done well.

GS Motorsport's systems back up what they claim. I dropped .3's and picked up 2 mph in the 1/4 by going with their 2 1/2" true dual X system(with cats) over the stock system w/flowmaster.

I don't think that Carolina R/T can get true dual exhaust because it is against the law to remove a catylitic convertor (North Carolina, dunno about other states)with less than 50,000 miles.
