Has anyone ever had this happen? I recently installed the MSD 6a ignition amp on my 1995 Dakota. It really smoothed out the idle and it also ran a little better. Anyway, the first time I drove it in the rain, my truck started "boggling", "backfiring", and wouldn't go over 25 MPH even when it was floored. I checked all the wires even though I had triple wrapped them in electrical tape. But once I took off the MSD it ran normal again. Any ideas? Thanks.

Where did you mount the box? Sounds like your connections or the box are not waterproof.

I mounted it behind the passenger side wheel well on the firewall. Do you think that the box could have gotten water in it? Because I triple wrapped the wires and am sure that no water could have gotten to them?
I didn't think that it was a fuel problem since it has only happened once and that was when I had the MSD installed and it was raining. It never happened before and hasn't happened since. Thanks.

Mounting electrical things on the firewall isn't usually a good idea because when it rains your always have some water run down the gap between the hood and cowl. Ford had a lot of problems with engine control modules on their trucks because of that same problem. Also check and make sure that the weather stripping that goes on the cowl is in good condition. If that's in bad shape it may let more water run down then usual.

Hope this helps.

I want to get the 6a ignition, and I was wondering where everything hooks up. I don't know much about the ignition system, and don't know what to look for. Where are the components located and would the msd install harness help? Also, would it be necessary to get a new coil, and what coil would be best? Thnx

Unfortunatly, the MSD box is not waterproof. It's best mounted inside the passenger compartment. Oddly enough, MSD also sells a marine version of the same box, which is fully potted and water resistant.

Also take a close look at all your connections. Sometimes water can get into the connections and cause the same problems. Especially if you have a deutsh connector. Water enters where the wires enter the back of the connector. Than can easily be sealed with some silicone.

Thanks for all your help. I'm going to remount it probably near the PCM. Thanks again though for all your responses.
