Ok, found a local dual exhaust shop who I think I trust him to do a dual exhaust system on my new 4.7 DAK QC.

We did the sales dance...my choice: a press bend 2.25 inch dual outlet that he would 'custom' bend in his shop or a outsource mandrel bent 2.50 inch tail pipe system...both for the same price, dumping into 3 inch chrome tail pipes...what would you choose to keep or at least expand for low end torque? (he wants to do the 2.5 inch system)

BTW, we're using a Flowmaster SUV Performance 50 Series muffler with single 2.5 inch inlet and dual 2.25 inch outlets...guy is a wizzard, could either stick the tail pipes into or over those 2.25 outlets...

Thanks (in search of the HOLY TRAIL with MAX POWER...ok, giving credit to HJ Simpson!)

Mace, forgot to tell you when we talked that I had 2.5 pipes coming out. Like Kraw said though, I dont think the 2 1/4 would make a big difference performance wise. May make it just a teeny tiny bit quieter. Not sure. As for the 40 series, A friend got a 40 on his Dak, same truck as mine, and parked side by side you cannot tell the difference. only difference comes when accelerating. His has a slightly different tone to it but is not any louder. Both are nice and mellow once your up and running.

Thanks for the feedback, looks like I'll go with the mandrel bent 2.5 inch pipes.

Re: choice of mufflers, already have the Flowmaster SUV Performance 50 Series sitting in my house.

Will post once the system is on re: how if feels performance wise and what it sounds like.

I had a dual exhaust system installed on my 2000 Dakota CC 4.7 4x4 about 2 weeks ago...same basic system as the one you posted (i.e., Flowmaster 50s with 2.25 outlets). I had previously put an Airaid intake on the truck and I'm very pleased with the performance now. My highway MPG went from low 16s to mid 19s (which shocked me, but so far that's the mpg) and the increase in power is very noticeable. I lost no low end torque from the feel of it and the mid and top end have really opened up nicely. Plus, the sound is, as a friend said, "really beefy". It still makes me smile when I start it up. I didn't expect the significant improvement but am thrilled to see it.

If you're running the 2.5" Intermediate pipe from the Cat to the muffler and then out into dual 2.25" pipes...that's just about perfect for the V8's (normally aspirated). Should sound pretty darn good.

(I run the 50-Series SUV muffler as well...ok, it's LOUD with a high-flow cat on a S/C'd V6...heehehehe.) ;)

Hey Mace - as far as the "HOLY TRAIL with MAX POWER" thing, buy a Phord. HEHE (Just some payback for your comment about my Schwinn. I like my Schwinn. What's wrong with my Schwinn?) LOL.

Question: Can't anybody have a decent conversation around here anymore without some dork acting silly?
Answer: NO. Hehe

Phord...FORD...First On Race Day...Forget Off Road Driving...hmmm, which to apply?

First On Race Day applies to my 1972 MACH1 with 351C, C6 tranny, hi-rise manifold, 2800 stall converter with shift kit (do miss the kick down rod), headers, Holley 650 double pump, big cam, and 4.11 rear, oh not to mention 2-chamber Flowmaster custom exhaust with H pipe...alas, it hasn't terrorized the neighborhood for 2 years, sitting in my garage, I swear, every so often, my wife advertises it in the local paper.

Forget Off Road Driving - not a DAK story (she is still a virgin, has yet to see a dirt road none the less a cool, rocky, muddy trail), but my 1998 JEEP Sahara did pass a town FORD snow plow that ran off a dirt road in a state park, a snow covered mess I passed with no problem...haven't owned a ford truck yet

BTW, got me a cheap old WAL-MART Huffy, no turn signals, but has a custom holster for my old Mossberg pistol grip, short barreled 12G...very easy to ride that huffy and catch up to them rice burners (not enough stickers to make 'em go real fast) and take some pot shots at their Maxwell House coffee can mufflers...yee ha!

Keeping on topic, called my muffler man today, the 2.5 inch mandrel bent system is in minus the 3 inch chrome tips, he wanted me to come on down and do the the muffler and tail pipes and come back later for the tips, I said I'd wait for him to do it all in one shot, figured I get a better complete system done in one stop shopping.

marc, or anyone else, did you notice any big difference with the airaid intake? I think I can buy one from a website, with shipping it's close to $200. is it worth it? they say 11hp improvement. otherwise, i'll wait to see how the K&N works.

Dodge Dakota: when deciding on an intake, dyno data can be deceiving. Why? Comparing a cold air system to a non-cold air can give equal HP numbers if the dyno run is with the hood open ( which it often is ). Then both systems are sucking the same temperature air. But when the hood is closed and you're accelerating at speed the cold air system can make more power because it is supplying colder air. Unless you know just how the dyno tests were performed, you could end up buying the system which gives less power. A good cold air system will outperform a non-cold air system, but the difference may not be great...or it may.

I played with intakes on my 2000 Intrepid, and with the G-Tech I got .25 seconds faster 0-60 times with the factory stock 'cold air' intake than I did with a K&N filter sucking underhood air. That was with the factory paper filter too....so much for the theory of low restriction filter always giving better performance.

stifbiz,

I am very pleased with my Airaid Intake...very noticable power increase. But you can get it a lot cheaper than $200 from truckperformance.com. You can get it for the 4.7 for about $140.

To the people up top about the exhaust...you need to get away from flowmaster...they are such older news...dynomax is 10Xs better.

dud - actual flow tests by an independant testing facility showed Dynomax to flow slightly better. No where close to 10X. They haven't held up as well for me as Flowmasters so I have been sticking with the "older news". Thanks.
