I purchased a used 98 RC 5.9 R/T recently and I am hoping to do a few mods in the future. I have been reading and searching out information about the truck and have learned a lot. I love all the information that is available but I sometimes get confused. The problem I have is I don’t what all has been done to the truck so far. I put new Autolite 3923’s, cap, rotor and pro-wires on. I have a new air intake system bought but not installed. This weekend I am going to remove the TB for cleaning and I will take it to our local speed shop for some porting and polishing (he’s a friend so it will be free). I plan to do the timing mod if I can find that sensor to do it.

Now for some questions: The former owner has had a new exhaust system put on and it appears to be a professional job. It has a 2 in 1 out cat. It then runs to a Dynamax Ultra-Flow muffler and then a 3” single to the tailpipe. It sounds very good and looks good too.

Q. # 1: Does this exhaust sound like an OK setup? Is this something I should leave alone or should I plan to change it in the future. (It’s only a couple of months old.)

Q. # 2: Is there a way to tell if the PCM has been flashed or if it has a chip or something?

Q. # 3: Are there any tricks to porting the TB that I should make my buddy aware of? He is just planning on cleaning up the lip around the holes and smoothing it out a little. (This may not do much for the truck I know but it is free so I thought we would try it.)

Q. # 4: Is there anyone that can give me a rundown of what this truck had on it from factory if I give them my VIN?

Well I guess that is all for now, I am sure there will be more in the future.

Any and all information, comments and suggestions are welcome; just don’t be too hard on me as I am a newbie so I have trouble explaining what I mean. LOL

Thanks in advance.

And thanks to the makers of this site!

I love my R/T so far!

Glad you're happy with ur new Dak!

Q1: If you're pleased with the sound, don't touch it. Dynomax makes a good muffler.

Q2: If it has a Jet chip it will be installed on your PCM between your harness - easy to spot. If you see it, remove it, try to sell it for some crackers or something, its junk. I don't know how to tell if your programming has been modified, but I would get the hypertech programmer, I've heard great things about them.

Q3: Don't really know. I'd recommend sticking with some slight porting and get everythign polished real nicely.

Q4: After I bought my durango I took the VIN to the parts department at my local Dodge dealership and they gave me a 7 page printout of every option installed on it. Pretty neat. Didnt cost ne thing.

Ask lots of questions and try to do everythign you can on your own. Its a lot of fun!

1. That is the stock exhaust system.

2. Go for a WOT run if it shifts at or around 4800 it is stock. If it shifts at or around 5200 it is a Mopar PCM.

3. Go to www.fast4x4.net under This site find How-To's then find throttle body porting. That is some of the best info. on porting a stock throttle body.

4. I can't but someone maybe able to.

What color is your Truck? Also you may want to check out Dakota R/T website and Delphi forums. HTH. Good luck.

'99 RC R/T, PPH headers, Flowmaster 50, No Cat, MSD 6a, BTM, IAT adjuster, Powerdyne Supercharger, M-1 4/2, Mopar PCM.
