i'm thinking about puttin an intake on my 2001 4.7 using PVC pipe and a huge filter but does PVC work really well if its directed out of the engine area?

Fresh air from outside is gonna help. Just try to keep the twists and turns to a minimum. Air is pretty compliant, but sharp angles cause turbulence, and that's just another form of restriction.

I did mine several ways on my '03 4.7

While towing up hills I still haven't been able to tell any real difference and mine get's 100% outside air thru 3 inch ABS.

I guess the stock setup on mine wasn't bad.

I'm wondering if it will come alive with some true dual exhaust like I've heard about.

You can see my mods HERE.

I put the homebrew on my 4.7 ... It sounds better, but I don't think it has helped with fuel efficiency or any HP gains. Maybe even lower mpg. I'm also still running stock exhaust which could attribute, but I'm thinking of putting the stock intake back on with a K&N drop in.

All I have to say is on intakes is too much money wasted. Go out to the local auto part store buy a 10 inch diameter filter with housing for like 15 buck and bolt it on. A quick easy 12 horses and a great sound. no worrys on h2o either.

Intakes do work. I ran 15.32 totally stock. I removed muffler from my truck and picked up .15 in 1/4, homebrew with very large kn and flap removed picked up another .11, have now done 180 thermo, tps adjustment, and IAT relocate, fan removal waiting to go back to track to see what happens, was down to 15.06 hopefully can get into 14s now.

Free flowing exhaust and low retriction air intake work as a team.

IMHO - Strctly speaking of Performance, a "cold air intake" is a waste of time and money - unless you also refine the exhaust flow (maintain the 2 1/2" exhaust pipe diameter or you loose low end on a 4.7). Those two mods, done in tandem, will PROBABLY offer a bit more real-world power. Don't confuse more noise with more power!! Now, couple those 2 mods with a larger throttle body and cams - NOW YOU'RE TALKIN'
