My Dakota is a '01 QC, 5.9l, auto, 4x4, 3.92 LSD, with HD tow package. Now sitting at about 42,000 miles. Truck runs great, no problems, all stock except for a better air cleaner. I wanted more power (don't we all), but I generally don't race it. It's my daily driver and long haul vehicle. I live at 6200 feet, and often travel above 10,000 feet. I occasionally tow, haul, and drive the fire roads through mud and snow. So nothing really dramatic - normal truck use.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to buy the Hypertech from Jegs. It really is as easy as they say. There are two options, an 87 octane tune, and a 91 octane tune. According to published dyno sheets, there was only a couple of ponies differance between the two. And I didn't want to start buying premium fuel. The truck is a big enough pig as it is.

So, what did I gain? Plenty, is the answer. I can certainly feel the difference driving around town. More power and better throttle response. The nice thing is that it only takes a couple minutes to change back and forth between one tune and another. So you can really evaluate the difference. And yes, it's really noticable.

So then I took a short road trip. I drove up I-25 for about 110 miles. Average speed was 72 mph. Down to 50 in Denver, up to 90 north of there. Then we drove around Estes Park, through the park, and back home via the Peak to Peak highway, 470, and I-25. Average speed ranged from 50 in the mountains to 80 on the highway. The truck ran better up the hills, passed easier, and didn't down shift so soon. When it did down shift, it held it better so I didn't have to keep hitting the O/D Off button so often. A definate performance improvement.

On the way up I got 17 mpg. Previous trips netted me 14. On the way back I got 14 in the mountains (avg 50 mph), and 16 on the highway (avg 80 mph). Would I do it again? You bet. Do I have any regrets? Yes - why didn't I do this sooner?

Down side? Only one. The programmer sucks up your stock tune and spits out the performance tune, storing your stock tune in the programmer. If you then take it in to the dealer for service, and they upload a new program, you're hosed. You have to buy another programmer. You can restore yours to stock and then upload the performance tune to another truck of the same year. But you can't have the performance tune in more than one truck at a time.

Anyway, that's my experiance.

I just ordered a Hypertech from JC Whitney. $349.95 - 15% with a promo code. It ended up being about $315 with shipping. I went to the JCW website, requested a truck catalog, and it had the promo coupon on the back cover. I asked a salesman at Summit if they'd price match (I ordered a muffler from them and wanted one-stop shopping), but he said they will only pricematch specific prices on specific items. Too bad, no sale for you! After reading boB's post, I'm all that more excited to get my programmer!
