Interchangable 68mm TBs are stock for 2001, then they changed the design but not sure what year. I got mine from someone who ported his own, then found he couldn't use it anymore when he got a new truck. You can find them as cheap as $75 at car-part.com if you want to try home porting a used one.

I was looking at the K&N, but when I looked at their dyno tests, (these were done on a Durango) for the filter that fits my 4.7, there wasn't a significant increase in the low RPMs. I mean, 9 times outta 10, I'm running fairly low RPMs, I believe anyhow. I'm figuring it's prolly somewhere between like 2000-3000, although I dun watch my tach all that often. When I looked at the dyno test, there wasn't much increase in that range. Is there an intake that'll give me a good increase in the low RPMs? And if not, which seems to give the best bang for your buck?

GraphiteDak: I have a similar homebrew on my 4.7 to yours, with K&N drop-in, and alloy tubes between the air box and throttle body. My differences are at the air box inlet. I use a 4" Fernco at the inlet, and the "bell" shape seems to make an excellent air collector from both the fender cowl induction AND where the rubber flap is removed. I tried what you did, a connection of hose toward the rubber flap "slot", but let me tell you, the Fernco works best for me. I've driven in some heavy rain with no sweat, and the bugs lay in the bottom of the box. All I can figure is that the least resistance to the throttle body, the better. Gotta dyno some day. OOps. Hey motorsport.

I didn't see this post, it got bumped down LOL!
Actually my inlet is NOT aimed towards the rubber flap at all. It's going down thru a hole I drilled behind the headlight. ALL outside air but I think with the extra distance I may change it to 4 inch as well.

And I did drive thru some more water, no problems.

When I had ALL 3 inch ABS with a K&N cone style on the end just behind the fog light it did seem to get a "PEAK" about 3200 RPM's and up but also was VERY VERY loud. Couldn't even hear my flowmaster at those RPM's!
I didn't want to chance water getting in there so the stock box with drop in K&N went back on in bewteen and the cone filter is off.

I'll swap my inlet to 4 inch and see what happens nect time I go up the mountains.
That seems to be my testing area anyway.

We are still on this subject I see. Well for all those 3.9's out there here is an idea how to build a true cold intake, not the ones that sit under your hood.

There you go. Works great especially on those cool nights. I also have my IAT sensor relocated under the 3 inch hole that was cut out. If anyone has any questions just ask. O this intake will be cheaper and much more efficient than those pieces of crap on ebay(not saying they are bad or anything) :)

Thanks for the come back, GraphiteDak. Nice job, Troy! The creativity in intakes is a shining spot in Dak mods. When the aftermarket won't respond, do it yourself! At $7 from Home Depot, the Fernco inlet is a way CHEAP experiment. Just be sure you get the 4" version with the "bell" shape (looks like a plumber's plunger), not the straight 4". Any of you guys out there that already have the rubber flap removed and the stock air box would do well to try this. Just remove the factory "elbow" inlet that sucks air from the fender, and slide the Fernco and one hose clamp (supplied) over the snout. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. My theory on the homebrew air intake deal is to REDUCE the restriction in the system from the inlet to the throttle body. The air flow is being aided by the motion of the vehicle, and has a very short distance to the TB. A mini ram-air, and minimal "sucking" of air. Think about it.

Troy did the EXACT same thing as me when he cut that 3 inch hole behind the right side headlight. Mines a 4.7 and I may try to enlarge my inlet to 4 inch. Right now I've got the stock air filter box back on. That is to keep excessive water out of my engine when I 4X4 in the creeks, etc.

Troy, I bet that intake is LOUD! Mine was when I ran all 3 inch from the throttle body to the cone style filter. I couldn't hear my exhaust over it at 3200 RPM's and up.

I put the stock filter box back on with my 3 inch ABS before and after it and it is almost as good in performance but a lot quieter when I accelerate and climb mountains.
