Hey guys. i've got a 99 Dakota 3.9l 5sp. it just turned 49,000 miles and i've got a problem. there is a rattle coming from the bottom of the motor. it's been doing it for a couple months that i've noticed but does seem to be getting louder. i took it to a garage yesterday thinking it might me the timing chain, but they said it didn't sound like it to them. i was told today that it sounds like the rod bearings. if any of you guys have any opinions of what it might be, please let me know.

thanks for the help, seth.

If a rod bearing is starting to fail, you'll really hear it the first few seconds at start up from an over night sit. Then it'll go away when the oil pressure builds. You should also see a drop in oil pressure too from a failing bearing. I've never known a timing chain to "rattle".

Sure sounds like the beginning of the DEATH RATTLE. Most likely have spun a rod bearing and now it is not oiling properly and eventually will wear plum out and either brake and go thru the side of you block or seize up on your crank an ruin it then break and go thru the block. I would drop the oil pan asap and check them you might be able to save yourself alot of money and heartache.
