Subject: Torque Converter Performance?
IP: Logged

Message:
Fellas,

I'm considering swapping out my stock torque converter for a 2000 stall Mopar converter, but I have a few questions:

1. Will my ONLY benefit come from a higher rev launch?
*Not good for me because I run street tires and high revs will only fry my tires. Slicks not an option yet.

2. Will my gas milage worsen when driving around town if the Mopar converter doesn't lock up until 2000 rpms?
My rpms usually don't go over 2000 when I'm cruisen around.

3. Is the Mopar converter more efficient than the stock?

Thanks fellas. I need to change my trans fluid soon, so it might be a good time to change the converter if it won't hurt my track times.

Oh, who knows what the stall is on the stocker?

i didnt know mopar had one set so low. most people go with the 2600 or the 2800 stall.

i hear they are a PITA to change.

Eric,

Did some research and I'm not going with a torque converter until I run w/slicks. I'll only add to my traction problems with a higher stall and I don't want to run slicks until a tranny rebuild (stocker almost @80,000 miles).

Yup, Mopar has a 2000 stall according to KRC's website. The problem with too high a stall is that the converter is always slippin until it reaches 2600 or 2800 rpm (depening on what stall one goes with). After, lets say 2600, it locks-up and no excessive heat. BUT, until it hits 2600 excessive heat will be produced. This can be a big problem when my cruising rpm is below 2600 (my usual cruisin rpm is less than 2000).

Basically, I didn't want to grenade my tranny with all the excessive heat. This is what I got from my research, so if I'm butt-backwards someone straighten me out!

How's it going with you? Sell the charger yet?

Eli

sounds logical enough... BUT, from what i have read (keep in mind i havnt read a lot, because i dont have a auto) by using a higher stall, the converter is usually smaller, therefore uses less fluid, wich in turn, produces more RWHP

just about everyone i know who has a stall in there RT has at LEAST a 2600. and these are on everyday drivers. no one has had a problem with there converter, or trans, that i have heard of.

i think Dan Bennett (ex dakota RT club pres) has a 3000 stall in his.
and although Scott's is not a daily driver, he just put in a 3600 (or 3800) billet converter. (along with a 1,000 HP trans)

i would DEFINATLY go higher than a 2k stall later if i were you. thats not even going to be in your powerband.

you are going to start making power at about 3k, and thats about the best time to kick the nitrous on. if you leave the line, at about 2600, by the time you get to the 60' you will be making power, and the nitrous will be ready to go.

also, my buddy bill has a 2800 viper converter in his RT, and it is a LOT looser than a mopar. he LOVES it! said he couldnt imagine driveing without it.

i have a guy who is going to pick up the SC in the begining of next month. i am also selling my slicks.

Dan Bennett is currently running a 3500 stall. Most go with the Mopar 2400 stall like I'm running. It's a lot cheaper and really a good stall for the money. Plus I like that it's streetable. It's working great for me and I don't have to take a mortgage to run a decent converter.

I'm definitely going with a 2400 or 2600 stall when I rebuild the tranny. After I get me a daily clunker, I'll run the truck more aggressively without worrying about braking something and being stuck without a ride.

Thanks for the info fellas, just going to wait a little longer before getting the stall.

Eli
