Subject: 3.55 vs. 3.92, what is the difference?

I am kinda new to the world of dakota performance and changes people do to them. I have a 98, 318 dakota with 3.55 gears. What would be the result of changing them out to 3.92's.
How hard is it to change them?

Thanks!

The Gear Ratio is defined as the number of times the driveshaft (or pinion) will rotate for each turn of the wheel (or ring gear). So if you were to have a 3.73:1 gear ratio the driveshaft would turn 3.73 times for every turn of the wheel.

Gear ratio is calculated by dividing the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear. The higher the number, the lower the ratio: a 5.29 gear has a lower ratio than a 4.10 gear. With a lower gear ratio the driveshaft (and thus the engine) turns more for each revolution of the wheel, you can develop more power and torque at the wheel for any given speed. Lower ratios are generally desirable when going off-road. Similarly at highway speeds, the lower the gear ratio the faster the engine must run - this impacts fuel economy dramatically.

Whenever you change tire sizes you affect the final drive ratio. Switching from a 30" tire to a 35" tire changes the the final drive ratio by 16%. This may drop the engine out of its' "power band" and result in poor performance and fuel economy. To restore performance we must change the gear ratio to compensate for the change in tire size. If we originally had a gear ratio of 3.07:1 then to restore our performance we need to choose a gear ratio that is close to 16% lower, such as 3.55:1. If we wanted to increase off road performance we might even choose a 4.10:1 ratio

From my experience, the highway speed Tach reading is about 300 rpm more with a 3:92, compared to a 3:55. I had a '92 with 3:55 for 8 years, and was leary of the 3:92 in my '01 at first, but I love it and wouldn't have it any other way. The performance benefit is awesome.

I just did a 3.55 open to 4.10 limited slip swap. RPMs are almost exactly 300 more with the 4.10s compared to the 3.55s.
