The "ram air" effect doesn't kick in until you hit around 100mph. Until then its just a cold air intake. Might add a little more than your average could air intake though. Maybe.

The ram air effect "kicks in" an any mph, but will have a higher effect as the speed rises. Just ask GM, they have known this for years. (Camaro SS)

This last year at Daytona for the NCTS race, NASCAR didn't like the speeds the trucks were going (too high).

So they reduced the 2 intake tubes(that are mounted at the grill and feed the carb)from 2 1/5" to 2" and that ALONE took 80 hp off of the motor and reduced speeds by 6-9 mph. No plate, no other mods.

I know that we are talking speeds of 175+ mph, but that should prove just how vital forced air is at any speed.

The next time you're doing 65 mph, stick that hand out the window...enough said!

I have a ram air box with two 4" air ducts running to the grill. In the staging lanes, I, as an example, may get a 29.6" baro. pressure reading on my scanner. At about 39 mph after the launch, the baro. pressure reading from the scanner has risen to 30" so there is an affect.

They got the 80hp by just using the speed they
were going prior to the reduction and the
speed after, vs the weight and drag # of the
trucks.

That 80hp rating was staight from NASCAR,
not any one team (they gaurd their #'s like Fort
Knox!).

Thanks Darryl. That's kinda what I figured. I was really hoping you woulda said they had a dyno in a wind tunnel tho. That would be sweet. Much less variability. Whether it 'works' or not ..... or to what extent, I'm set on getting a Ram Air hood because (a) it certainly can't HURT performance, (b) it looks really sweet, and (c) I get bored very easily and feel the need to be constantly messing with stuff. I just can't figure out which one I like best. :o)
