I purchased a Volant Air intake system for a '01 3.9L V6 (really it is labeled for 5.2/5.9L) I haven't had a chance to install it yet. I think the differences are Volant has a curved plastic intake tube and no air hat. It has a little heat shield around the filter element. I think this replaces the entire stock system.

The Airaid,I think, replaces only the stock air filter box. The Airaid does seem to have a much better heat shield that separates the filter element from the engine compartment.

This is all mere observation from pictures of both products. I don't have a 4.7L. I think I'd go with the Airaid. I don't know if removing the airhat makes a big difference. Perhaps someone could respond to that. That's my 2 cents. Good luck.

The air-raid kit involves that heat shield that just snaps onto the bottom half of the stock air box. That snap on shield (for whatever reason) is solid powder coated metal. Why? I bet it weighs ten pounds! The Volant routes the filter (with a PLASTIC tube) down by the frame. There is a fair amount of air coming up from under that air dam on the Gen III body style. I think Volant gets my vote and I'll be ordering one at the end of June.

I would go with the Volant because it removes the air hat. The air hat is pretty restrictive on the 4.7. Also, the Volant locates the filter to the front passenger side of the engine compartment. Removing the rubber piece next to the radiator will allow cooler air to reach the filter. Last, it's blue. How cool. hehehehe

Is the filter on the Volant re-usable like the K&N? If it can't be cleaned and re-used I could see it getting expensive to replace filters. I looked on the site and it doesn't say anything about the filter they use.

yes - it is like the K&N. I don't know about the quality first hand though. I had a K&N look-a-like a while ago that was supposed to be just like a K&N. It came with my Weber carb on my Jeep. After several cleanings it started wearing through. I doubt the Volant is like that but I can't say for sure. Sorry.

I saw where Holley (I think) started selling re-usable filters (a la K&N) but their fabric was blue. I think that's what Volant may be using. I have been wondering if my K&N cleaning kit would harm the Volant filter, but I haven't called them yet.

the volant utilizes plastic heat shielding material as opposed to the heat conducting metal on the airaid. Bothe filters are washable and require some sort of oiling after so many miles.
Both will produce similar results such as increased throttle response and better gas milage. Your biggest mistake was not buying a Chevy.

Jon,
Real men don't wear Bow Ties! No "flameing intended", but as a Dakota owner, I use this site often for info. I wouldn't go on a Chevy forum, unless I was thinking about changeing over to a different truck......hmmm, maybe that's why you're here. Anyway, Merry Christmas, hope your next new truck is a Dodge,
John
