Subject: Hard to find t-stat
IP: Logged

Message:
What is the deal here?
I have looked all day on the internet and at the so-called auto parts stores for a 180 t-stat for my '03 4.7

So far I hear the Robertshaw is P/N GT755-180
None of the places I checked today (Autozone/Checker/Pep Boys) has that or any Robertshaw t-stats.

So I came back home and searched some more.
SOmeone said the Super Stant P/N is 65358
I went back to the closest Checker Auto and found that one on the shelf but it looks like what would probably fit your 5.2/5.9 engines I expected the 4.7 to look like the reverse poppet or whatever style like what I installed into our '98 Chysler sedan since it is mounted on the inlet instead of outlet of the engine coolant lines. I also checked Speedtweaks, after finally finding a working website, did not specify any part numbers.
BTW the search engine here doesn't give very usable results.

OK. Without being flamed I'd like to know for absolute sure what t-stat I need and maybe pics of it if possible. I know there are a lot of people here who like to help, thanks in advance.

Someone's got to know this part number because I see it listed in their mods. It looks like many have trouble finding this part. What's the deal here?

Last night when I was getting discouraged in the auto parts store I told the clerk to "pull some of the rice from the shelves and bring back the auto parts!"

LOL... actually I'm at work and would like to look for one on my way home if I can just get the correct stant / superstant part number.

Call Joe Sheppard at Cooper Automotive and ask for Part #GT-755. You do not need to purchase a new gasket since you will be able to transfer it off your old stat. Joe's #248-754-7203 and this is the part number for the robert shaw 180.

And what state is he in?

There's got to be somewhere here in Phoneix, AZ that still sells Robertshaw.

BTW. A lot of people keep saying they bought theres at Autozone. Today, heaven forbid to buy even MORE parts for our other (hard to get parts for) Chrysler sedan I was told by the clerk that they changed from Robertshaw to stant about 6 months ago. No wonder there is confusion here LOL!

I'll wait a while to see if I can get a stant number or find the robertshaw locally. If I get really pist I'll call that long distance number you mentioned.

I like my Chrysler products. But the sh*t sure is hard to find for them, even STOCK parts that are plentiful for other makes (motor mounts, wheel bearings, etc etc etc)!

Robert Shaw is out of the automobile thermostat business, which is why AutoZone no longer sells them. I picked one up at AutoZone about a year ago and never used it, but I sold it a couple of months ago. The Stant equivalent is #65358. Here's a link for a detailed install using the Stant part:

What are they, like collector items or something now? I'll pay 100 dollars for an unused one in the wrapper.

Thanks for the link.

However....... I have had that stat listed before.
It appears to be the one for the 318/360 engine not my 4.7
On that page you posted it even shows the 318/360 in the photos.
If I had the 360 I definitely wouldn't be needing to hunt down the stat especially since I've worked on pretty much everything that's old school like those engines.. But I have the 4.7 and so far over the last few days I still don't know the stant brand number or any t-stat that anyone stocks...BUMMER!
I'd hate to have to bug the dealer for a 180 degree t-stat they probably don't have.

If anyone has a brainstorm (fart) about where to get this sucker I'd appreciate it!

The robert shaw is still available-they still make auto thermostats. Their mechanism is also superior to stant. If your that upset about making the long distance call ask them to ship it next day for free, they did it for me. As a matter of fact when I told him what a hard time I had( 2 nights onthe net, calling half a dozen retailers) finding the product he didn't even charge me for it.

stant heavy duty stat part number 65358 is the corect one for the 4.7 in fact it fits all the motors in the dakota i used it in mine it looks diferent and it doent have the notch like the original one but it fits no problem its been in my 4.7 for over a year with no leaks at all just slip the old oring that came off the old onto the new one and put it back on spring side facing the motor its really easy you dont even need to take off the hose clamps just drain a little water and the 2 bolts and that it really easy i mean easy. the reason you cant find any parts store that says it fits the 4.7 is the 4.7 is a 195 degree t stat and you purchasing a 180 but trust me it works and i did it and so have hundreds of others. your temp gauge wont read any lower cause they arent sensitive enough to tell the 15 degree diference nope this helps

Heck yeah that helps. I thank you both for your helpful replies.

If you say the 318/360 t-stat does work for sure I'll use it. The local store has the stainless stant part number you're talking about.

I haven't taken mine apart yet so I just assumed it has that funny washer looking thing hanging off the back like some of the new ones do.

I'll go buy that stant one and probably change it saturday morning.
