Subject: Lightning Competition??
IP: Logged

Message:

Hello All,
I'm here seeking your help in the Phoenix area early next year for an up coming competition with some Ford Lightnings.

The program is Hot Teams Racing ( HTR )at
www.outrunU.com
and we compete GM, Ford and Mopars against each other in heads up drag racing between January and June of each year. This is a very low key race that takes place on our normal test and tune track night and its free other than the normal $15 track entry.

Bare with me just a bit here and I will do my best to explain what this invitation is about and why your help is so desperately needed.
I am not a Dakota owner but I am on the MOpar Team (73challenger & 69RR ) and am trying to help put this together.

We are trying to find 5 Dakotas to race 5 Lightnings at one of the local tracks on a Friday or Sat night. You would be working/racing with a few other faster Mopars that will be taking on some very fast Mustangs that same night that the Lightnings will be joined by. Its a one run only type thing and it is heads up, not brackets. You test and tune then you race at 9:00pm. Your match, should you agree, will be set up by our team captain and he works to get you the best match possible. Once both racers agree to the match its set up. This is no cake walk, it's gonna be tough and there is certainly no garantees of victory but the Mopar Team is a very strong and proud team here in Phoenix. We work hard to help each other out, we are all working for the same goal and that is to woop up on some Fords.

The problem that we have here is that initially this match idea was floated to hold five slots in the race for this new Lightning club that has joined HTR which is not a problem but they have asked if they can run only Dodge Dakotas. We currently do not have enough Dakotas on our team to make this happen. We only have two Dakotas at this point and one is down. We have no shortage of guys willing to race them, myself included, but we just don't have many Dakotas.

This type of racing is a blast. It's not only the race itself that is fun but all the internet web forum chat leading up to it discussing the competitors. This race will attract a lot of spectators since there is a lot of folks that want to see lightnings and Dakotas go at it. We want 5 good Dakotas to represent this forum or any club and we will introduce the club on the HTR main page just as the Lightning club is there now.

Here is what we know so far about the Lightning guys. They have two fast trucks that are both capable of low 12's. they have a but load of others that are 13's to high 14's. I have talked with their club personally and they are all for this and a great bunch but I would really like for the Mopar Team to pull this off using only Dakotas against them.

Let me know if you can help or where we might get some help for this competition.

Thanks for your time,
john

Damn!
That is the fastest duelly I have ever seen.
We had a race a couple of years ago between a few PowerStrokes and Cummins and the Mopars easily rule in that category.

I don't know if you know Nowell but his truck is also listed. VEry fast.

If you think there is a chance you will have that monster in the area go sign it up.
http://www.outrunu.com/SignUp.html

That would be a fun one to throw out and see what type of match it attracts. Boy we could play up the sympathy card on that one weighing over 3tons and a duelly :) If you sign up you will get a vehicle number and then show up on the spec sheet. I would love to get you set up to race one of those pesky mustangs but just afraid I would pull something laughing so hard.... :)

Blackrt,

Go to this link and scroll down to the paragraph that list the dakota and watch the video from earlier this season.

http://www.outrunu.com/2003Jan10FordMOpar.html

That Dakota is bone stock and he beat a much faster stock 5.0 The Mstg feel asleep at the light. It doesn't always happen that way but at the time we didn't have anyone else available to race that car and Greg steped up with no fear. AND HE WON! We could not beleive it, call it luck or what ever but we expected a beating on that line up. It was fun.

The date is not set yet but probably in March of 2004. If you sign up your truck must be faster than 16.0et. Other than that its pretty much open. If you are in the area sign it up and let the team captain (his name is Bill) worry about if the truck is fast enough. He will contact you at some point with questions about your vehicle. You can tell him all the deatils about what ET is might run etc. Don't worry the team captain are very good at what they do.

thanks,
john

Definitely MUST keep us posted.

blackrtaz, I think I've talked to you before. Where in AZ do you live?
I'm on the west side 131st Ave and Thunderbird.

I wouldn't mind meeting some locals to see what they've got. My truck being new and all I'm all on my own out here.

Dave,
Do you live in the Phoenix area? I think we can get agreement for your truck in this race if so. This could get real intersting!

Blackrt,
Yes duner lives in the Phoenix area also and he is a listed HTR racer for at least a couple of years now. He will be competing in this race and if you are familiar with his truck then you already know why it is such a prized listing for us :)

Graphite,
Most definetly. I will stop back by once we get the ball rolling early next year. At this point we are just trying to get a feel for how many Dakotas we can produce for this race. We are a bit shy right now but I think we will come up with some more as we get the word out. We'll keep our fingers crossed. If you guys know of others that are willing to play have them post here, contact Bill (Mopar Team Cap) at HTR or myself at HTRjohn@HotMail.com

Damn, I wish I lived in Arizona. I love a good sand-bagger's race anytime. In talking with Duner about it, it sounds like good ol' fashioned street racing..... that is, the Sleepers will always take home the money.

Too bad I'm in Atlanta. My Dakota Sport looks almost completely stock and runs 14.3's on the motor. That'll hang with Gen I and some Gen 2 Lightnings.

Oh well. Hope we get to see some good videos...

Check with Duner and he'll be able to dig up some Dakota owners out there. Bill Werden, Travis Mock, etc.

Excellent!

Mike go here and sign up. We will be putting you to work in this match :)
AND anyone else that thinks they might want to race in this, it's about 10 or 12 questions I think and its all free.

http://www.outrunu.com/SignUp.html

Under HTR rules every racer must list the same basic details about their vehicle and that is what the signup form does. On that form you are asked questions such as type of induction, motor size, tire size etc. All of this info is made public on the spec sheets. Be honest about it, an incorrect answer is a DQ.

Also....
Here is how you earn points for your team.
3pts for the win light in your match.
2pts for best reaction time in your match.
1pt, participation. Basically you get a time slip.
A red light is 1pt for you and the win and reation time points go to the competitor.
I think I got all that correct.

Just so you know. One of the strategies that Bill has used succesfully for the Mopar Team in the past is building up a vehicle that we know has little or no chance of winning a race. In other words if we have a match that is likely to lose we sometimes BS the car to the other team cap so they think it is faster than it really is and sometimes it gets the other competitor nervous or maybe a red light. It's hallarious when it works and at that point the racer just coast through and he is done for the night :)
Anyway, the point is we don't give up on anything, if they beat us they will have to earn it.

blackrtaz, I think we talked via a few emails a while back. That was before I bought my Dakota finally. I was asking about good 4 door set ups and you and many others replied.

Anyway. I was still upside down on my car that was less than 2 years old so I took my chances at that big tent sale earlier this summer that had all the Dodge dealers all in one place.

We came late on Sunday when most trucks were gone. I tried finding a 5.9 Quad Cab to look at but the dealers could not locate any. Actually, I don't think they make them any more.
As of now I'm happy I got the 4.7. It runs nice and has plenty of potential after all.

I wound up getting a fully loaded QC 4X4 with towing package etc that they had on site. The 4X4 will come in handy in the winter trips to Payson. Obviously it will never be quite what an R/T is performance wise but heck this truck runs great and I've allready done the intitial mods to it and have killed some stock Honda Civics (Ricers) with it so I'm happy so far.

Keep in touch blackrtaz, my email is on here.
Let me know if you hang with any of the local Dakota gang here in AZ. As it cools down I'll get more of a chance to get out. I'd like to see some other Daks and other peoples handy work in person.

Dave,

Bring the dually! We have a Lightning match in mind for that one also, we will just have to get the OK from both sides.

Go to the web link above and sign it up. You will know if you have a match maybe as much as a month in advance but I am 90% sure you will. This would just be to cool to pass up.

You know I'm in! Our only problem (or help) may be that most of the quicker Dakota guys and the Lightning group are going to go against each other next month at the Truckin' Nationals. We'll get a chance to see how quick they are...... but they will also get the same chance to measure us.

Mike, Scott, Adam and myself went to the track (Speedworld) last night, and all of us were flying. It was a Team Speedworld race so most of the other vehicles there were trailered race cars. To say that some of the people noticed our times might be an understatement. None of us matched our quickest times..... but we were cutting some killer lights! Nothing makes your night like turning on the win light against a lettered, trailered, open-headered racecar!

Duner, How the heck are ya!
So it looks like the Dakotas may be in pretty good shape here. I don't think I know the other two guys you mentioned but see if they will join you for this match up. We have five spots we are going to hold open for Dakotas on the Mopar team and 5 spots open for Lightnings on the Ford team.
There will be five more pairs there of various Ford and Mopar models competing also. I've talked with the Lightning guys and they are a
good bunch and that will make this fun combo to set up.

I think I am going to go out to FB in a couple of weeks to test and tune a bit. I will give you a holler when I go.

Oh, and this has nothing to do with what we are talking about here but Greg A from the Mopar Team sent me this and I about fell out of my chair laughing at it :)
