Are there any modifications that can be done to the 4.7L '02 engine that will cost less than $50? I just bought it not too long ago and am now in the process of putting mods into it. I've been in Iraq fighting for our country for the past 8 months and am very anxious to get started.

Welcome back! There are 2 fans on your truck. The one you see everytime you open the hood and an electric one. Some people remove the big engine driven fan and just leave the electric and say they get an improvement in performance. Relocating the IAT adjuster is also cheap. Hmmmm.. don't know what else you can do for under fifty bucks.

2000 4.7 CC auto, clear corners, Magnaflow catback, Kenne Bell s/c, Aquamist water injection.

j's right,
and maybe a home brew air intake, and a self porting the TB with a dremel tool, that'd still keep you under the $$.

don't know if I'd change the plugs or not, it's cheap, but no real difference unless the ones in it have a problem.

These are cheap, easy, small benefit mods.

Installing a 180 t-stat, will also help it stay cooler with the belt clutch/fan off.

Welcome back, good luck

Either relocate the IAT Sensor or install an IAT Adjuster. You don't relocate an IAT Adjuster. Since you have an '02, the IAT is probably a plastic lock-in instead of a brass thread. It would be cheaper to build/install the IAT adjuster. Also, I think the '03 IAT sensors are already located upstream of the Airhat.

Another idea is to put AMSoil in the rear differential (and manual transmission if you have it).

Remove the rubber flap to the left of your radiator and replace it with some sort of screen.

DO NOT REMOVE THAT RUBBER FLAP! I've heard that too many times now you guys are asking for trouble. The rubber flap is there to protect your AC lines. Those lines are surprisingly fragile and will burst if hit with a small stone. The rubber flap absorbs the impact of road debris, a screen mesh is not strong enough or reliable enough to install. Leave the rubber flap there and think about other ways of porting air into your engine. It's a $400 repair if murphey has his way.

Don't take this personally, but I'd say save your money and don't bother.

All of these repairs provide minimal hp improvement (.5-1.5%) if you're lucky, and won't be too hot on your gas mileage either. I've been on chassis dynos and seen 10% swings from run to run, so I don't know if you ever convince me you're gaining power. And removing the fan has proven safe so far, but I don't know the long term effects of running you engine a bit warmer and thermal cycling as the fan turns on and off.

Yes, the engine designers at Dodge had to make compromises in power and performance, but they did it to meet emissions AND make your engine last longer. I work for an engine company, and the reason most companies don't have "kits" and "mods" that they sell to the public is that they know they can 1) make your car emission non-complaint and 2) warranty costs go up.

If you're really itching to drop $50, go buy a K&N drop in, just don't follow the ricer mentality of thinking it's actually "mod"-ing your engine.

Just my $.02, and this wasn't an attack on anyone in particular, just commenting that in the hunt for "mods" people are making trade-offs for very limited gains.

Funny....I've never had a problem since I REMOVED THAT RUBBER FLAP! Guess it is a chance I'm willing to take. Mr. Sleepy, did you have a problem after REMOVING THAT RUBBER FLAP or are you just saying that something bad would happen because it is possible? The screen I have does a fine job protecting the AC lines.

DO NOT FILL UP THAT GAS TANK! It COULD explode from a static spark.

Just my $.02, and this wasn't an attack on anyone in particular, just commenting. :-P

Green,

Agreed, they are small, but measurable gains.

With my 180 t-stat, my engine runs cooler, even without the belt clutch/fan. Here in HOuston/Galveston, my a/c about always on, hence, so is the electric fan.

The real gain in removing the clutch/fan, (small gain), is the rotating weight of the viscous clutch! It's fairly heavy.
