Subject: M-1 vs KRC Ported / Polished Intake
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone have experience with the M-1 Intake vs the Stock Ported and Polished one that KRC sells? I realize the AC bracket has to be cut for the M-1 and the Temp sensor is ditched.

I've looked around and can't find much info on these, hoping someone here might have some good insight.

I've been looking into the same thing for a month now. If you are going with big cam and head work, you should go with the M1. If you are staying under 5500 RPM, get the KRC (that is what I'm going with). Actually, I think Hughes does the work and sells them direct or through Marty at KRC. Hughes has stage 1 and stage 2. Check out their web site.
I have the name of a guy that makes a kit to make the M1 easier to install but I'll have to look it up if you are still interested.

I received the new M-1 direct repacement intake today (P5007398). It's very similar to the 4 barrel M-1 but most things( themostat, vacuum fittings, sensors, etc.) are in the stock location. To install it you need the installation kit (P5007638) which has special spacers for the A/C, alt. and fuel rails, this kit is NOT included with the manifold. As I just found out.

And from what I got from Mopar...the installation kit is on back order unless you find a dealer with the parts in stock.

I got the manifold(P5007398) but not the installation kit (P5007638). The instructions that came with the manifold read " This manifold is designed to work with all stock Magnum components and accesories. The spacers in the installation kit are required to re-use the fuel rails, A/C and alternator brackets."
But no kit in the box, they give you a part number so you can order one and the number wasn't any good when the dealer punched it in his computer. The only good thing is they listed all the parts that are in the kit and most of the things you can get at your local parts store.
But the spacers are another story, though they have a diagram of the spacers and the measurments so that you could have a machine shop make them up.

Ok...that made no sense. If it was designed to work with the stock Magnum components...uhhhh...why the installation kit (besides gaskets). ;)

Dodge...Different. hehehehe

Randy has a full kit for $540, thats the M-1 intake, bracket spacers, fuel rail spacers, makes it so your injectors fit the bosses correctly, and it has a bunch of other stuff to litterally make it just a bolt on piece, all the other BS is taken care of. He includes the thermostat housing, tstat, REAL rubber coated metal gaskets and everything else.

$540 is steep but when you add up all the parts its a somewhat fair price. The only thing you have to do extra is clean the old gasket off and cut the corner of the AC bracket.

Got the 2 barrel M-1 installed today. It wasn't a big deal after all, made up some temporary spacers for now. Installation was a breeze, just transfer the parts and install, no cutting and no relocating anything. The IAT sensor is the only thing moved, it's now located directly under the throttle body. I went out for a road test, but it's hard to tell what kind of performance I gained with it as I did alot of other mods. this week ( Compcams camshaft, Compcams double roller timing set, R/T lifters, R/T springs and retainers, MP roller rockers and ASP under drive crank pulley)and it will take the PCM awhile to adjust.I do know that when it hits 3000 rpm it pulls like crazy. I was going about 25 mph and put my foot into it, it down shifted into 1st and the tires broke loose, thats a first for this Dakota.

CanDak,
What year and model Dak did you drop that on and where did you buy it, what was the cost? You say that you didn't have to cut the AC bracket to mount it??? Did your intake come with the rubber coated metal gasket, a thermostat pipe (housing)? Do you have a stock TB or after market?

Thanks for the help,
Shawn

Shawn,

It's installed on a 99 5.2 and I got it at a local Dodge dealer. Check out the KRC Performance website, they have alot of info on it and I think they have them in stock. No, you don't have to cut the A/C bracket to mount it but you need a spacer that's in the installation kit. I used the Mopar gasket set (not included) that comes with new bolts and rubber coated end gaskets. You use the thermostat and housing off the stock manifold, same size and location as is the by-pass hose. I'm using a Quick-D 50mm throttle body but now wish I had a 52mm as the bores are larger on the M-1. It cost me $325 for the manifold, thats in Canadian dollars, I don't know what the price is in the U.S., my friend is the parts manager were I bought it, so I kinda got a deal on it.
