The 4.7L pistons are cast, not Hyperutectic like on the Magnum Engines. Hyperutectic pistons are of better quality than the factory cast pistons. (Forged of course is the preferred route.) :)

As for the ring gap, and to put it in easy terms: There's a larger gap from the top of the piston to the first ring which can cause detonation problems as well as piston "rattling" (back and forth motion) with higher than normal cylinder pressures...mainly with Nitrous though.

Again, it can be done...but be careful. If nobody makes a kit for them, don't try to match your own nitrous/fuel jets. There's more to it than just checking the plugs after a few runs to see if you need more or less fuel/nitrous.

Called NX today, and yup, I was running a 200hp shot! They said their jet sheet was wrong and they have corrected the problem. Guess it was a good thing I couldn't hook up or I might have been walking home from the track. As for my times, they were done with the 100hp shot apparently. Ran so good with the 50x2 shot, I think its time for the 75x2 shot. Then, maybe a blower! Never ends does it ;)

200HP!! holy @hit! glad everything is still working ok for ya. i am installing my kit still. i have read the instructons about a hundred times now and cant seem to find the part about the correct plugs and gap and fuel requirements? did you have the same problem or am i missing a page from the already shitty instructions? also i dont have a fuel test port on my fuel rail. so i guess i have to cut the line and put a "T" fitting in there. did you have this problem? is the 150HP shot on our 5.2's safe? do you run any octane booster or anything?

150HP shot (or anything higher) is askin for problems on the 3.9/5.2/5.9L Magnums. There's several people on the DML and RTML running 150HP NX Systems (mainly 5.9L but with a few 5.2L) and they are all running a timing retard system or Nitrous control box (had to with detonation) along with a 180 T'Stat and Autolite 3922 plugs gapped @ .035".

I know what you mean Kevin. Everyone told me to "follow the instructions exactly", but there isn't much to follow. The instructions are horrible! But, NX does have a really good tech line that will help you out if you need it. I called them up a couple of times, and each time they stressed that the plugs should be gapped at .035, even with the MSD ignition. Also, the plugs should be at least 1 level cooler and COPPER, not platinum (I'm running 3923's). As for the fuel, I always run 93 octane, 100+ at the track. Too bad you don't have a fuel test port. Thats gonna be a pain! Mine has one, so wasn't a problem for me. The 5.2 will handle the 150hp shot with ease. I'm running 150 right now, runs fine. Like I said earlier, no detonation and not retarding the timing at all, not even with the 200 shot. When you are all hooked up, ready to go, start with 50hp. You will see how well it takes it and move right up. It is a little scary at first, but you'll get used to it. BTW, where are you mounting the "trigger".

Just saw Bernd's post. IF you decide to retard the timing, call NX first and ask them directly. They told me that it is not necessary, unless you get into the 200+ shot range, and that retarding the timing is the #1 cause of problems.

jeff,
about the trigger mounting location. i looked at the TB for about an hour yesterday and couldent find a "good" spot that looked safe to mount it. also where did you mount all of your switches? i dont smoke so i think im gonna go for the ash tray. that way everything is hidden when i want it to be. what size bottle did you get? i got the 15lb and was wondering how long it will last me before re-filling? and about how much?

I was going to fabricate a bracket to put on the TB, but then I got to thinking. If you did put it on the TB, it would get activated at WOT, and RPM's might be too low. Also, I have to tap it in 1st, and wait until after the shift to hold down the trigger, or I just spin. If you put it on the TB, you couldn't do that, unless you use the "arming" switch, but I didn't think that would be a good idea. So, the arming switch went next to the hood release, the trigger is on my center console, placed where I just have to move my thumb to activate it. Used a AA battery holder out of an old radio I had to cover the trigger when not in use, so its totally hidden. I have a regular cab, so chose the 10# bottle. Fits perfect behind the passenger seat and can reach over and turn the bottle on and off when I need to. I made 6 runs (1/4 mile) before refilling my bottle, and it only took 5#. As for the cost of a refill, you will have to look around for the best price. Big "mother" bottles cost almost nothing per pound, about $0.40, but people usually charge 3.50-4.50 per pound around here for a fill. If you can find others that use nitrous, or if you go to the track often, it would be worth getting the refill station setup. Will run you around $600, but you will make that up fast, even charging 3.50 per pound. You can get the big bottles at any welding supply store cheap.

jeff,
what RPM's do you need before activating? the switch location sounds like a good idea but i dont have the auto i have the 5speed. i can barely drive holding a drink in my hand! i couldent imagine haveing a 100Hp button in my hand while shifting! (i hope my insurance agent isnt reading this!)did you look at locating the switch on your gas pedal at all? the throttle body just doesnt seem like a very good choice for me. as for the refillig station that is a good idea. probably could make a buck or two doing that!

Not sure about the 5spd Kevin. Bernd might be able to help you out with that. I believe his is a 5spd as well. I would go with the TB before the gas pedal, because I would think the trigger would get messed up under the pedal. If I had a 5spd, it would be mounted on the stick, thumb activated. I believe the minimum RPM to kick it in is 2300, but I usually hit it anywhere from 2500-3000.

nope not yet. all i have left to do is mount the w.o.t. switch, and splice the fuel line. the problem with the splicing is the "T" fitting that came with the kit is totally wrong. so today i have been all over the pace trying to find the right one. still no luck! any suggestions?

I just bought a 99 5.2 Sport Regular Cab Black on Black 4x4 auto 355 about 3 weeks ago. Dodge 318, the good ones never die! Anyway, it's bone stock right now and although it's got a set of balls, I want it to start to giggle like a school girl... I contacted NOS and they are coming out with a full kit for these trucks next month 85-135 hp shot just like the kits they already have for the later models I assume (about $850 or so I think.) I'd rather wait for the full kit then get the NX stuff that I have to figure out. Personally, I know very little about nitrous. I'm in Chicago, so while I have the down time this winter, I plan on figuring this all out. Around March-ish when the weather starts to improve... ohh yea... My little brother just finished up over at Wyo Tech so I've got somewhat of an up-and-coming expert on my side too.

My main question is that if I install NOTHING more than the kit (no motor mods., no exhaust mods, I mean NOTHING) will everything be okay with a 135 hp shot? My brother's Hot Rod professors have said that adding up to a 150hp shot on a stock motor is perfectly fine and that I should be able to spray all day. I'm reading through the posts with you nuts slapping 200hp shots with your only complaints being that you chew up tires - WOW! I know the 318 is known for being just a glutten for punishment... but DAMN! So, I'm looking for opinions and experiences. Could I JUST install the kit, not touch anything else, and spray with relatively low risk?

(Yea, you see where I'm going... "You want to race me??? Oh, well it's a good truck, it's quick for a 4x4 I guess... What kind of car is that? A Crust-stang? Well, I guess I'll race. You know I have a V8 right? Oh you do too? Well, how about we put $100 on it? Yea, I like to gamble and I'm betting your car will break down or something. A friend of mine once had one of them Ford cars, it never ran right..."
Then you line up with him and purge........... goodnight!)

Yes...I have the throttle switch mounted on my linkage plate. It's easy to install.

Sean Meldrum...you mean the originator of "FABSM" - Fresh Air by Sean Meldrum. ;)
