Hello all. I'm looking for the highest number reading on an early tach, gen 1 or 2. The highest gauge I've seen is only 6 grand. Thats a little low for what I need. I have an aftermarket now but looking for a more stock appearence. Any ideas, suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim

why would you need a tach over 6K? That has to be one of the more STUPID questions yet! Some of us like to wind up the motor to 6000+ rpm. That's why.

that has to be one of the more STUPID replies yet. a Dodge V-6 is not designed to rev over 5.5 grand and hold together very long! I hope you have a big supply of V-6 blocks in your back yard as you're gonna need them.

Well, I have a blower on a 3.9 and it does wind to 6 with no problems. I'd like to see when it gets over revved. If I miss a shift and it doesn't shift til well over the 6 grand I'd like to to have atleast a fighting chance to know where it ends.
As for the block living with it. I have 120K on a stock block and seems to be doing just fine. Sure it's getting tired and has enough blow by to put a stanley steamer to shame but it still runs great and gets 22 mpg on the highway. Besides it looks as if the trans is going to give up before the engine does.
I have a lil Red Express and the factory tach only goes to 5 grand. That motor is about half way home at 5 grand.

i have built bunches of 318 motors,my best one could rev to 6500,stock bottom end, shaft mounted rockers,i have reved my 3.9 to 5400 ,right to fuel shut off,i think the 3.9 could rev to 6000 stock, anything higher you might need rev kit, just my 2 cents worth from experiance

OK, at least you answered my question, but a motor with that kinda millage and a blower, reving that high ain't long for this world. If I were you I would start building a replacement very soon. One other point...its usually cheaper to build'n before ya blow'm.

one other thing....reving a engine past the peak torque is accomplishs nothing. The power starts to fall off after that. I used to launch a C/MP Cornet big block(383) at 6800 and shift at 7200, but it sure wasn't a stock bottom end!

My 3.9 no longer has a computer. The TBI was ditched when the blower was put on. This blower is a roots style made by B&M. The alternator and fuel pump are still run thru the computer, but only tell it when to turn on and off, I have fuel pressure right up to, and past, 6 grand. It's now running a Carter TQ (ThermoQuad), might be a lil big but it likes it a lot more than the Holley 600 that was on it. The motor has run well over 6 grand, thanks to a broken return spring. I'm planning on building a magnum head engine as soon as I can, looking at a few parts vans for there donations. When that motor is done I'll get a rev limiter for it. Anyway does this mean a 6 grand tach is all I can get in a factory set up?

The blower will let it rev to the moon, since everything is being forced into it. But at 6K the blower starts to defeat it self. The intake charge is so hot that it's not making a difference anymore. And since I can't run a intercooler on it 6K is where I shift it.
