nothing's gonna give you big power gains with just air intake alone, you gain power from a combination of mods working together...Intense performance is the best in my opinion...

the best is to make your own get some three inch pcv one straight about 8 to 12 inches long and one curve i recommend using the softer rubber type peice for this then go to advance and look for the k&n filter that is about the sizes of roll of paper towels. this all cost about 80 buck the most expensive part being the k&n

I'll tell you I got a 2001 dak with the 4.7 and I made my own intake using a K&N conical filter, I made it so the filter sits right where the hole is in the inner fender and removed the flap in the radiator support to let air in that way also, I thought it made the truck feel a little better but last weekend I put the stock air box and elbow back in and left the factory airhat off (used the one I made for my home made intake) and I can really feel a difference now, I guess what they say is true, it's better to pull 70-100 degree outside air in than to pull 200 degree under hood air in. Also on keenebells web site it says: 10 degree temp rise = -1% HP, I'm either going to just get a drop in K&N or save up for the K&N FIPK.

Get the K&N fipk gen 2 from jegs for like 250. It comes with heat sheild, easy to install and warranty. Just don't over tighten and make sure you get the latest one with thicker plastic at the tb bolt. mine cracked and they mailed me a new one for FREE in 4 days. Look on every sportsfisherman boat and it's a K&N filter, might as well go with the housing and warranty. your truck wiil sound like a vacum on steriods under the hood, you can hear the enginge sucking all the air to its hearts content.

Get the K&N FIPK from Summit. It's cheaper than Jeg's. The K&N is the best.

Build your own for around 60 bucks and you will get better performance than those 250 dollar pieces of crap you can choose from. Heres my cold air intake:

I hate to see people waste their money when all you need to do is be a little imaginative.

Hey Troy, I like your set up. Where did you get the filter from? Looks like it is set deeper inside the fenderwell than any other intake I have seen. No need for a heat shield! Thanks for the pic!

excuse me but "cold air" is a ricer term. aftermarket intakes are about un-restricting the air flow path, not cold air! damn, after running my RT for 10 mins, i can open the hood and barely touch my KN FIPK, thats how hot it gets, damn plastic. u want cold air? u get a intercooler or go balls out and just get blown and add the intercooler with a c02 sprayer mounted on its front.

I just posted this somewhere else, but it applies more here...

I made mine last nights. I used 3 inch ABS and a 3 inch K&N cone shaped filter that takes the air from behind the bumper. It's wrapped with foil tape for now just to reflect some heat. Later I will wrap it with 1/4 inch insulated bubble/foil wrap.

100% OUTSIDE AIR. The tube is basically the same overall length of the stock tubing but way less restrictive. I haven't ran it yet to see what the actual gain is, but I sure as hell noticed it come alive over 3000 RPM's and the 1st to 2nd gear shift is a lot firmer. Very noticable. I was surprised. I'll have to race my friend to see how it did. I'm sure my home brew is FAR superior to the lame pipe and filter you will buy from someone. I had to cut a hole to get my filter to the outside of the engine compartment. The cold air kit you buy just sticks the filter to one side of the other of the engine compartment. What a rip!

My mod described in detail here

03Dak you did the same exact thing that i did. I've noticed a definite increase with the colder air being sucked in from outside. Definitely much better than than all the other intakes out there. Where do you get the wrap from? Because my steel pipe becomes very hot.

Troy, The wrap is just foil tape that is sticky on one side. You can get at any HAVC distributor.

I just used it to reflect some heat as the BLACK ABS would not reflect much alone.

The bubble wrap I plan on using is also available at some HVAC dist. It is insulation that is usually glued to the indside of metal ductowrk. Works great. It's basically foil with air pockets in the middle. I plan on wrapping the outside of my intake with it.

I cut a hole in the metal behind my passenger side headlight. The intake then goes down behind the front bumper. It seems to work great. I can actually HEAR the intake breath and I have a loud 40 series Flowmaster. The truck sounds bad ass now.
This was the ONLY place I could find to get the 3 inch pipe to the outside.
The fender would be restrictive. Hanging a pipe down next to the engine would be plain stupid. And anywhere behind the radiator would also be stupid. So basically, buying a filter hanging off of a pipe which is breathing air from under your hood, is a waste of money, and stupid.

Thanks hammers, if you have any questions on the setup, Ill be glad to help. I think you will be happy that you did put your filter in your bumper. Also look at the third picture that I posted above. On the filter it says RAMAIR. Look to the right of the "A" in AIR and you notice a little black thing. Thats my IAT sensor sitting there reading what the outside temp is, not being influenced by the heat under the hood. When you put the metal or plastic piping in the 3 inch hole that you must drill, be sure to have something to act as a buffer such as a foamy one sided tape around the pipe. That way the metal or plastic pipe wont clank on the metal of your truck, making wierd noises as your engine moves.

Or you could do this....

We made RAM AIR into the hood of my friends '92 Beretta. It friggin worked wonders for this car! Here is is with the first coat of paint on the hood. It needs a lot more body work tho.

Of course we did this to a P.O.S. Chevy Beretta which we use to experiment on. My woman threatened me not to even think of such a mod on my 2003 Dakota 4.7 4X4 so I just made a true outside air (cold air if you will) intake system that works great!

Click on the photo for more info on simple mods and my experiments.

Hey Troy, is that air hat the OEM one and do you have a 318/360? My bro in-law has a 318 RAM and wants to make a cold air. His throttle body sits straight up and is different than my 4.7 Liter where I just used a 3 inch no-hub clamped right onto my throttle body inlet to adapt to the ABS pipe.

BTW, I haven't driven my truck much since my mod because I drive a company vehicle to work. So, tonight after several days went by I drove my truck. That intake is FRIGGIN' LOUD when on the throttle. Almost, I say ALMOST too loud.
I can only assume that when I wrap it with the insulation soon that it will quiet it back down a little bit. Right now it's louder than my FLowmaster, from inside the cab anyway!

03Dak, its a v6. Yeah I know what you mean about the intake being loud. I love hitting the gas real quick and listening to the truck gulp in air. It turns heads when people hear it. IM not sure about what length pipe I used but I bought the two 45 degree manhedral ( i think thats how you spell it) rubber connectors at the same place I bought the pipe. Then I used 4 clamps from home depot to keep everything together and spray painted it with some hi temp black paint. 03Dak, can I see a picture and get a description on how u covered the bottom up. When it rains, the filter does get wet, and I dont really like that. Thanks man

Troy, I didn't even notice you had a six. That's still great that you noticed a real improvment by the intake. Home brew is the best.

I got home late tonight so I can't take a new picture tonight of my cheesy splash gaurd.
But all I have under there is a piece of sheet metal that I screwed under the filter really quick like to prevent excessive splashing. I don't think it will stop all of the water and what little gets thru the front opening and splashes it probably wont be enought to hurt it except make it dirty. Cleaning those K&N's is a pain sometimes.

I will be driving this thing up into the snow this winter, so I'll definitely see what happens then. Maybe later this next week I'll mess with it some more. I'll keep stuff posted. And I always post it HERE so check back when ever.
