Subject: Check engine light after HO cam install!
IP: Logged

Message:
These cams have been a pain I finally got the cams aligned and the truck idling smooth. Then when I take my test run the check engine light stays on (I did try reseting the computer which didn't work) and when I get to 3500 rpm the engine starts cutting out like the a rev limiter kicked in!! Could the computer just need time to adjust to the increase in fuel and air?? Yes, I triple checked everything and all connections are good. Like I said below 3500 runs perfect? Any ideas out there?

Mine ran perfect right after the install so I doubt it needs time to adjust. What code is coming up ? That should point you in the right direction. Key on/off,on/off, then on to read code at your odometer. Then look it up at obdii.com

Email me off list, mine did the same thing, and it was something you couldn't see unless you take it all apart. Fell on it's face totally after about 3500rpm's

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to mess up the timing when doing the HO cam swap if the timing chain never comes off the sprocket? I don't think that it is, but I want to make sure. Also, has anyone done the install without the wedge tool and had a problem with the timing tensioners? If so, does the truck run poorly? Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer any of these questions!

I did the swap and my truck ran fair at start up. After I ran it a bit (10 minutes) it seemed to come around. I reset the computer and it's been great ever since.

Yes you can screw up the timing if it jumps a tooth. If you took your time though I seriously doubt it jumped a tooth at the cam. If you didn't use the block (or a block) then I suppose it's possible that you jumped a tooth farther down in the motor (crank end).

The tensioners are racheted. So once they snap to the next spot, yer done. Now you have to take the front all apart. YUCK. So use the block!!! It's cheap insurance. Will it run poorly? I would assume you would not be able to get the cam back on the sprocket...er....viceversa I guess.

I didn't have the "wedge tool". I made a wood block to fit tight and went for it. BTW...the block ended up having to be different for one side then the other.

Thanks for the info! Did you reset the computer before or after you ran it for the 10 minutes?

Do you have to remove the intake manifold for h.o. cam swap?

NNnnnooooo....You only remove that if you are doing the HO manifold also. I didn't do that and prolly won't either. I hear it's mostly power above 4000. My truck is a 4x4qc. I'm not trying to turn it into a vette (no o-fense low riders). I need power under 3600.

I swapped cams a month ago. Truck fired right up without missing a beat. Reset computer before we fired it up. No codes thrown. It does take two different size wedges (make the from plywood and tape them up). We inserted both wedges to be on the safe side. I think the problem above is one cam is off a tooth. As the other post says...ur taking major chances by not blocking the cam chain. Mark the chain with white paint "between" the links and the mark on the cam so you know it's going back in the right place. The instructions on buymopar were pretty good.

Hey gps_jetskier,

Do you recall the dimensions of the wedges you made? Also what did you use for the spanner toll when you tightened the cam sprocket bolt?

make wedge from 7/16 or 1/2" stock. 5" long, tapering from 7/8" to 1 9/16" over about 3 1/2". This will work for both sides. Best way to skip spanner tool is to put a breaker bar on the crank bolt. I couldn't with a plow frame in the way and got by with holding cam with a large pair of water pump pliers while a freind put the final torque to it.

It's kinda hard to have it jump a tooth.

But the cam sensor, under the pass. side in the front, could be easy.

Knocking a rocker arm off is also, and it will still run, prety good too with one off!

I made this block and it fit perfectly on one side. For the other though I had a hard time getting it by a bump in the block, then once I did it would fall straight to the bottom without holding the tensioners.

Two words of advice here using these dimensions. First, make the block big and do the drivers side first. Then cut the block down to those dims and use it on the passenger side.

Second....put a string on it for sure. Glad I did.

If using plywood blocks - tape them up or pieces will break off and fall down in the engine when you "tap" them in place.

I'm still having the same problem after all this time! The dealer has had the truck for 18 days and claim that they have set it back to TDC that it was off 2 teeth on the passenger side. The same code is still there? They stripped it down to the block and reset the adjusters and everything. What else could cause the code? I'm going to pick the truck up today b/c I'm tired of dealing with them!! How do you know the cams are at TDC. I know the V8 marks go straight up. But how can you check it in relation to the mark on the balancer??

I'd try the block first at the size I gave, should be close to size of the factory blocks, just measured the blocks I made instead of looking it up again. I used two blocks to do both sides at once and had no problems with either side. string is good advice, we also zip tied chain to sprocket so it couldn't move. mfcp1 - did you email Ed Halterman to see what he had to say ? I'm curious as to why he wouldn't share it here.

He did email me. I just got back from vacation in Oregon. If I would post it here, it would be like a reeeeeal long post. I went through alot of crap the first time I did this.So to make a reeeal long story short, I racked my brain, and somehow, the dowell pins got sheared, ruining the sprocket as well. Replaced dowell and sprocket, no more prob. My truck was doing the same thing, but no check engine light.
