Well I just took the elbow of the air filter box that directs the intake to the wheel well. I also removed the rubber covering left of the rad and now I can peak through the closed grill and see the intake opening clear as a bell. Should allow for a little better air flow especially when moving for it should blow straight in like a ram air. Will probably go with a home brew in take and put on a $40.00 K&N cone filter. I don't want to spend money on an actually factory system because a future mod will be a super charger.

I have played around with the same mods/ideas. I currently have the Airaid intake & will probably replace it with a new one. It looks like intense performance's cold air stage III will soon be available for the 4.7L V8's. It uses flexible hosing with a filter in a canister for better heat shielding & has a funnel on the hose intake end that will mount up next to the radiator where that rubber boot was removed from. I emailed intenseperformance.com asking if/when it would be available but haven't heard back yet. It looks like you can build it with the parts they offer on the site but it'll cost more & not look as good as they could mass produce it I'm sure!

Waiting for my 2001 Quad 5.9 4x4 w/3.92 gears and was wondering how the Intense Performance Stage 3 Cold Air compares to the K&N filter system.
