Subject: Change stock rear to a posi
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 V6 2WD 5-speed manual CC. I don't have limited slip. I'd like to know how to go about switching the rear to a posi...what actually gets replaced...what the cost would be..etc.
Currently I am trying to collect information as I know very little about this, but based on my trucks poor performance in slippery conditions (my rear right wheel does all the work), and the fact that I hear having a posi rear is a performance booster, particularly off the line...I'm taking a serious look at whether it is a worthwhile venture.
If you have any info I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks,

Actually, I don't know whether I have limited slip or not. Since I've had the truck, it seems only one wheel (passenger side rear) does anything. It breaks loose often, and when it does, the truck sits there and does not seem to engage the other rear tire.

With this in mind I have seriously been thinkin about changing the rear-end to a limited slip. Would this also change the gears?..actually I don't know what my current gears are??...my guess is the 3.55...but how can I confirm any of this, and confirm whether or not I have limited slip. If the gears get changed in the process, my goal would be to get a 3.92 limited slip rear? Can this be done by anyone OTHER than the dealer to save some money?

Keep in mind I know very little about this subject and am assuming for daily road driving and driving in slippery conditions (rain, snow, ice), limited slip is better than one-wheel drive (I don't know what else to call it) or "locked" (both wheels all the time). And that the higher ratio will give me better performance.

I've read several threads on this subject, but in a nutshell, I'm gonna have a shop or the dealer do the work, so I just need to know what I currently have, what I am going to replace it with, and how much I should expect to pay. Not too much to ask :-)

Your help is appreciated.

To confirm the gears in the rear diff, look at the sticker in the glvoe box. Easiest way to give yourself a Limited slip woudl be to buy a PowerTrax Non-Slip Traction System. www.powertrax.com I run one in my R/T and love it. Lots better than the Chrysler limited slip unit I had stock.

HSKR, that Powertrax unit seems to be a very good upgrade. Thanks for the info. Does it make any noticeable noise? And about how extreme of a turn do you need to make in order for it to unlock, if you can tell of course?

Thanks.
