Subject: Short belt Questions??Battery in bed????
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey I was wondering if it was at all possible to remove the air conditioning unit on my truck! I never use it even in the dead of the summer.

That would be a good way of shedding some pounds! Or if thats not possible,(without taking it in to have it done)to just run a short belt on it and keeping the AC not connected! Anybody done this! What gains are there if any? Where to get the belt?

Also how hard is it to relocate the battery to the bed?

Thanks!

my friend just unplugs the AC unit, and lets it piss out into the air. i guess you can pull the lines, compressor, and the canister.

a short belt will not gain you much. the AC compressor freewheels when not turned on, so it dosent draw any HP when not in use

about how much do the AC components wiegh? (40+lbs)? losing that kind of wieght in the front would be nice. also is it worth buying a battery relocate kit for 60+ or just fabbing your own? any advice would be appreciate.

p.s. i hate this fcuking slow comp.

I would guess the compressor and condensor weigh the most. How long do you plan to keep this truck?

Unless you're investing enormous amounts of money into making this thing an all out dragster, don't remove the A/C, just use a shorter belt that doesnt pass over the compressor. You will significantly lower the value and apeal of your truck and you won't gain very much. But like I said, if you are doing things like striping the interior completely, no door panels, carpet, striped dash, no audio, no anemities, forced induction engine and nitrous, do not remove your AC. If you are then go ahead and enjoy the .0001 advantage in the 1/8 :). Otherwise you are really just junking your truck up.

98Durango360,
Do you have a belt part number, manufacture, route diagram?

Nope, sorry bud. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out tho. Figure a route, find the length of it, go get that length and ribbed belt and ur set.

the goodyear gatorback belts are available in just about every size you could want... one ? though... with the A/C off it's not turning the compressor so what's the point of bypassing it. If you remove the belt and spin the pulley you will see there is no drag.

There is drag at 3500, 4000, 5000RPM's. The reason i want one is because my truck never had a/c to begin with. I ordered it from the factory with out a/c. The gain is minimal, but there is no point for me to even run a belt on that pully.

is it worth $40 to .1hp honestly now... you can spin that pulley by hand and get 4-5 turns on a single spin... do you really think the drag on the bearings will make a noticable differnce compared to your power steering, alt, and water pump... if you want to get rid of useless loses get an electric fan... that will free up like 20hp at 5000rpm... or by pass the power steering... the AC pulley won't do much at all.

I have my battery in the back. Iused a Summit trunk mount battery kit and box. The Summit comes with #1 gauge cable. Route it down the passenger side and cross it over and splice it along the engine crossmember. Use the original battery to starter cable as your alternator to power distribution box cable. You'll have to put some ring terminals on it. If you plan on racing like I do, you will have to install a battery cut off switch on the negative battery cable. Do not install the cutoff on the positive cable. The stock battery is big and bulky and barely fits in the box. Don't sweat it. No need to spend 200 bucks on a fancy battery. A Sears Diehard Gold has 900 cranking amps and only weighs 31 pounds. I don't easily volunteer this type of information because I think some people on this website are bound and determined to spend more money than they have to on things. If you are planning on racing, and it sounds like you are, you will have to get better tires on the back if you don't already have them. If you still have the stock tires, heres another tip for you. Buy a 22lb and an 11 lb Olympic barbell plates. Lower your spare tire and slip these through the cable, then put your spare tire back on. The barbell plates will rest on top of the spare tire and the truck will pass tech inspection because the plates are hidden. Drop that rear tire pressure down to 20lbs and you're ready to go. I raced the 2000 season like this and it worked great. I race in Florida at Sunshine and Desoto dragstrip. I just started back after taking 2 years off and at this time I am racing a Hemi 1500 regular cab I bought in April. I'm doing a little work on the Dakota right now and then my daughter will race it while I run the Ram. If you have any more questions about the battery or how the Hemi runs, just ask. I still have the A/C on the Dakota. The other guy is right. If you are not building an all out drag truck then leave the A/C alone, pull the front sway bar off instead because you can easily put this back on.

Short belts cut down your ET...HELL YEA. Don't beleive what the others are saying try it. Go to a autoparts store and just keep putting on belts till you get one that fits right. I've got a 51" short belt for my Dakota R/T and it saves me .2 tenths each time I race. Well worth the 15 dollar belt. But IMO, it's not worth it to remove the A/C unless you are trying to make it an all out dragtruck.

I forgot to mention to forget about underdrive pulleys with this battery in back setup. I do run an electric fan with the stock pulleys with no problem. When I put the electric fan on, I picked up 2/10ths in the quarter mile. That's 18 to 20 more horsepower. I'm not sure at what point Kyle entered the picture but if his truck doesn't have A/C, how can he bypass a compressor pulley that doesn't exist. Kyle, if you're talking about the idler pulley, you could probably not use it if you could put adjustable brackets on the alternator or power steering pump so you could adjust the tension. It's not really worth all the trouble. In high horsepower applications, the idler pulley absorbs stress which would normally be put on the bearings of the other components during full throttle acceleration. It's best left alone. One more thing. Don't buy a Jet chip because they do nothing, I don't care what anyone says.

When you drag a truck thats as outa balance as these trucks are every pound off the front counts if you ask me, the a/c compressor is not a matter of drag its a matter of weight, after i striped my a/c, droped the sway bar and moved the battery i got better launches and better ET's
