Yeah, I finally got my 4.56 rear installed. It's not as bad as a lo of people thought it was going to be in a 5-speed 4.7L. I am also on 26" tall tires.

I am going to give them some love before I abuse them. I am going to Spokane Raceway next weekend and I'll see if I can improve my 60ft other than my sh!tty reaction times.

Who said they were gonna be bad for a 4.7? It's the 4 speed tranny in the R/T's that people are talking about being a killer on the highway. A 5 speed shouldn't be a problem.

the 5th gear in the 5speed is lower than the 4th gear in the auto's. so he will see even more rpm's on the highway.

I would think 1st gear would good for about 2mph now. It's a stump puller anyway, then figure in 4.56's and 26" tires.

Wait...how can that be? When you shift into 5th gear the RPM's drop below 2K...riding at 80mph in 4th gear sits at about 2600rpms shifting into 5th drops the RPM's lower. How can you see more RPM's in a vehicle w/ a 5th gear than a vehicle w/ a 4th gear?

If we have no 5th gear to drop to then the 2600rpm's get higher...if going 80mph in 5th gear sets u at about 1500rpm you go higher in rpms from 1500 again how can they be higher than 4th gear?

I havn't been to 80 MPH yet. However, I know before the swap on my 26" tires that 80-85MPH would run me around 3000 in 5th.

MikeD,

the fifth gear in the manual is .70 and in a four speed auto it is .69

New four speed autos get better highway mileage than five speeds. but city is vice versa

The final drive of the 4spd auto is lower than the NV3500.

46re OD is .69 x 4.56 =3.14 =3,253rpms@80mph
NV3500 5th is .729 x 4.56 =3.32 =3,437rpms@80mph
Thats 184rpms difference with the same tires.

The 5spd manual has a single overdrive gear like the auto so they are pretty close in thier ratios. The 5spd just has a extra low 1st gear to get off the line fast with a normal rear gear 3.55-3.92. The nv5600 has a single Overdrive gear and a super low 1st (5.63), but the viper's T56 has a double overdrive of .74 5th and .50 6th.

NV3500 46re 4spd auto
1st 4.01 2.45
2nd 2.32 1.45
3rd 1.40 1
4th 1 .69(OD)
5th .729(OD)

A good dodge trans link is:
http://www.vibratesoftware.com/html_help/html/chrysler/chrysler_transmissions.htm

It even has front wheel drive car ratios auto and manual.

I'm interested in your 3.92 gears if you still have them. I live in MA. Please let me know what you want for them with shipping. Also, if you have any pics of the gears and wear pattern that would be great. Are they stock gears, or aftermarket? Any idea if going from the 3.55s to 3.92s with the auto will need to change a speedo gear? (Not sure how this works in the dodge, in my mustang it required a new speedo gear on the tranny).

Thanks, Neil

I still have the gears. They are 13K miles old and the gears look brand new. I can take some pictures of them this weekend. The gears are the stock 3.92s for a 9.25" housing (12 bolt).

Depends what year you have. 97+ year Dakotas will correct the speedo on their own. There is a sensor that goes to the rear end for the speedo.

I am not sure on the shipping, I will find out. I will email you and let you know.

XPLIKT,

Hey guys, I'm new to this board, spend some time on the Dak R/T boards though. I've got a '99ib,rc R/T. I was just wondering where you got your gears and roughly how much? I know of a few different suppliers, but want to shop a little more before buying. Thanks man, -Justin

Oops, sorry Tim, I never saw your post. I still have my 3.92 (9.25" rear) if you want them.

The new gears were $230 shipped with an install kit. They are Motive gears. Back in November, yes November, there was a group buy. Premier Performance hosted it. He had no idea about 18 people would sign up and half a dozen people missed the deadline. $230 is a rare price to find gears, install kit, and shipping for. However, you can find all three for about 280 online. I would check Randy's and see what they are offering right now.

The install should cost about $200. I actually got quoted $180 and $190 some places. I was lazy and had an extra half hour added to mine cause I had them remove some leaf spring blocks while they were back there.

This install is much more common among the R/T guys than 4.7L 5spds. You'll like them A LOT, trust me. It's one of the best changes for the money.
