 Subject: Broken HO Cams on Dakota 4.7

Last week had a shop run by a good friend of mine install the HO cam and intake into my 2000 Dakota 4.7. The install went extremely smoothly - just like clockwork. The truck started right up and ran for one day and then just quit. After some diagnostic work we got the error code - it was p0340 - No Camshaft sensor signal. We then replaced the Cam sensor - still no luck. Checked compression and none of the passenger side cylinders had any compression - the drivers side was normal. Decided to look at the passenger side cam so we took the valve cover (Cam cover) off and discovered the the retaining pin on the camshaft that fits into the timing chain sprocket had sheared off. There was nothing keeping the cam rotating causing the timing to be completely off. The mechanic put the old cam back in and low and behold - we had normal compression (did not start the engine - just turned it over a couple of times !!). My questions is has anyone else had such an experience with a 4.7 cam (HO or stock cam). I really intertested if this has happened to anyone else. Also if anyone else has seen this has it led to other problems (bent valves, etc) Thanks.

i reslly would like to purchase HO 4.7 cams, but have not talked to anyone who has installed them. krc has them but they want even email back or call. I would appreciate if you keep me posted on how its working out for you. jim julian jjulian@houston.rr.com

That pin is a locating pin, it is not meant to be
a high strength part. I'm afraid your mechanic
that installed your cams did not follow the
instructions in the manual. The instructions
say to grip the cam with adjustable pliers and
rotate the cam until the cam sprocket dowel is
aligned with the slot in the cam sprochet. That
is a two person work step. What they did is get
the pin lined up and then did not keep the
pressure on the cam with the pliers, while they
tightened the bolt. So they crushed the pin as
they tightened the bolt. I know this cause it has
happened on two installs in So Cal. If you
follow the directions the cams will install with
not problems. When you tighten that bolt, if it
goes in easy it's correct, if it's a bitch to tighten
you have crushed the pin.
