Subject: TONS of roller rocker noise..PLEASE HELP
IP: Logged

Message:
hey guys...ive had the fastman top end package installed for about a week and a half now, (dan and i installed it) and i had tons of noise coming from the motor..is this a serious problem?? we replaced EVERYTHING...lifters, pushrods, heads, EVERYTHING!! when you pull the valve cover, is there supposed to be a bunch of slop in the rockers?? the noise was a loud ticking, getting heavier under acceleration, in the 3k-4k rpm range, and then would die off pretty much as soon as i let off the gas....whats going on...someone help me!!

Quite often roller rockers need to be re-lashed after a bit of use... You could be hearing them back off a bit. Have you e-mailed or called Dan to discuss this yet?

not trying to insult you but did you check to see if the rockers are hitting the baffels in the valve covers

sincity-yea, i talked to dan, he said its not uncommon for them to need re-torquing after a few miles, which i put on about 200 since we did the top end.

slowrtman-i put on the mopar tall covers, so thats not the problem, but that was a good observation, a lot of people have had that problem.

what (if any) are the repercussions of incorrectly setting valve lash?? like what would happen if i overtightened them??

If you overtighten your rockers, you could effectively ruin your new lifters, or "flatten" your cam.

I know that they are rollers, but with extreme pressures forced on the lobe the cam will start to show signs of fatigue from the roller-rockers being to tight.

It sounds like your not to far from Dan "The Fastman," so I would take the truck back to him and the two of you re-set your lash on the rockers. Then enjoy!

damn damn damn.

actually, im about 7 hours from dan :(

was just reading the crane directions...yea...bent valves, broken/bent pushrods...i really wish i had someone looking over my shoulder while i am/was doing this. its 2am, at 8am im going to pick up a new radiator, then hopefully be on the road to the dyno shop, albeit a few hours late. i just finished re-hooking up the nitrous, im wide awake, do to an unplanned nap till about 11pm...im thinking i might pull the valve covers and plugs and recheck/reset the valve lash...better safe than sorry. if i want to be a REAL mechanic in a year or two, i might as well start doing things right right now.

Not a big deal to re-adjust the rockers. If you over tighten them, you will get extremely rough idle and misfires. Been there done that. To tighten them to the point of bending pushrods or flattening the cam, it will probably not even start and run. Mine with just a couple to tight woudl barely idle.

Here is a thing to try to locate the noise. Remove one valve cover and start the engine. Don't rev the motor. Now you can see the rockers at work. We use to adjust the valves like this. If you have one pecking, you can locate it real ease. If you want to adjust them here; shut the motor off, back the adjuster lock nut off about 1/2 a turn or so on all the rockers on that bank, start the motor and loosen a valve up till it clatters, adjust it down till it stops, then add an additional 1/2 to 3/4 a turn (in slow increments), adjust all the valves on that side like this. Turn off the motor and tighten the adjuster lock nut back down, try to put additional turn on the adjuster. This should have your lock nut real tight and this bank should be done. Get the other side. If you find a problem, I'm sure Dan can help you, or get back to the board. Good luck.

I have re adjusted mine three times and now I hear one making noise again. At least its on the driver side which is much easier than the passenger side.

If you want/have roller rockers, periodic adjustment is going to be required. You ought to do it yourself. It's not that hard and it gets easier each time.

R/T shifting problems
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 rc r/t that unfortunately sustained a hit and run impact on the front passengers side. She is put back together, but now my transmission will drop out of 4th into 3rd as soon as I take my foot off the pedal to slow down after driving at speeds of 65 or so for a few miles. After this occurs I have to stay hard on the throttle to get it to shift back into 4th. If I shut the truck off for awhile or reset the computer the problem disappears until I drive on the interstate again. I need help so that Insurance of the hit and run drunk bastard will pay for the damages.

hail- my first suggestion would be to check your kickdown cable...that could cause your symptoms, that is as long as there was no frame/driveline damage in the wreck.

pulled the valve covers and everything off, yes, they were on there waaay too damn tight..what can i say im a baby gorilla. anywho, ive got one half done im about to go back outside and do battle with the drivers side in a minute.

First off.....if it was "hit and run" how do you know he was a "drunk Bastard"?

Second.....why not start a new thread with subject line of which you are asking instead of tacking this question on something completly unrelated?

Just wondering
