I have a 99 Dakota 5.2 Auto. My transmission has been giving me problems the past few days. When I drive slow down my street it seems to have a problem shifting to second.... it just bumps in and out of gear till I speed up more then it drives fine. Also when I come to stop I heard a "clunk" come from the Trans. On my was to work today I could a high pitch whine coming from the transmission while driving and it stopped when I put it in neutral. What could be causing my problem?

The clunk is probably the o/d coming out. If you are driving around town, lock the o/d out to save your tranny.
You may have to adjust your throttle cable that goes to your tranny to allow it to shift sooner at lower speeds.

The whining sound that you are hearing in gear is probably coming from a clogged filter.

Transmission filters typically do not get clogged unless there is a failure that is creating excessive contamination.

What color is the fluid? If it is dark(not red, closer to black), and/or smells burnt, it's probably time for an overhaul. Have a trans shop check it out.
