Subject: PPIII doesn't work with other mods?

I called hypertech today, and they told me the programers for stock engines. I told them I was putting on headers next week with no converters, and that I already had an FIPK, and 53mm t/b. The tech told me it would ping due to the increased airflow potential. Is this acurate? Anyone with a modded R/T ever use one w/o pinging? If it is true then all it does is to lean out the mixture with a little more timing. I would just get the M-1 B&G flash, but if it needs service then won't the flash be overwritten? I can't afford a reflash every time I need service. I also don't have an M1 intake yet. I need more timing. My truck couldn't even spin the stock tires at the track! Best 60' of 2.222, with perfect traction! WEAK!

That is correct, the handheld tuners are intended for stock trucks. There is no way for them to develop programs to optimize all of the possible mod combinations, especially when people start changing cams.

What year is your truck/what size engine and how soon are you looking to get the flash done?

Well, I really don't wan,t a flash because if it goes in for warranty work then it is possible that the computer might get reflashed. I called Superchips today, and they said that they have a programmer for the dakota 5.9 that will be released real soon. Basically I think my timing is way retarded, and I want more. I know about the crank sensor mod, and might just do that.

bull sh*t--- I have a 99 318 with cam, headers, and even more goodies including the Hypertech. It helped me tremendously b/c now I can shift out at 5500rpms instead of 5000. As far as timing advance is concerned, I don't think it helped much. But just being able to hold the gears longer has knocked of 4 tenths. Until I can get a custom flash, b/c my truck isn't quite how I want it, the hypertech was well worth it. By the way- my bottom end is a HELL of a lot stronger now and pulls all the way through the gears. But then again, what do I know? I'm just a girl.

Well thanks for the reply Dak Chick. Since you've probably had your Dakota longer than I, I'll assume you know more than I on the subject. No detonation? I just don't want a burned valve in my new truck. Guess I just need to man up and buy something.

Dak Chick, there is a major difference between just running and running correctly. Has your truck ever been on the dyno for wideband A/F reads. Do you have those charts for posting, if they exist?

You can do all sorts of things to the motors and any number of computer options will simply "run the truck". I was referring to it being properly tuned.

oh i am sooooo sorry---maybe my piece of sh*t isn't "properly tuned". I guess that's why it runs low 14's on street radials and has never given me ANY trouble whatsoever. Didn't mean to put your panties in a wad fellas. I see why everyone says to stay away from this site. Ya'll are too uptight, just thought I'd give it a try. Ta-ta big Boob, I mean Bob.

Because this is supposedly a woman posting, and I use the term loosely, I'm gonna bite my tonque a bit.

Let's just say that low 14's on something that has had a cam swap is nothing to write home about. There are people knocking down mid to low 13s on stock shortblocks. And if the PPIII is "da bomb" why are you even mentioning a custom flash option? I think that little footnote speaks for itself.

Diabolic, my truck currently runs on a B&G flash and that is what it was running for a 13.3@108 ET. We are working on a custom flash with 2 bar MAP for the blower setup that is on there now and I'm expecting it to click off something in the low 12s on slicks when we're done. That's with a mid-range cam grind and the ported 2.02 R/T heads.

Diabolic, I see you posting on some other lists as well on this topic. Do not spend $600+ for a B&G flash.

Email me offlist if you are decided that you need that flash because it's tuned for the M1. I can probably save you some money.

the cam I have isn't a radical one, just a mild street cam. For living in south Louisiana where the humidity is 100% and 90 degrees, low 14's is DAMN good. I didn't mean to start a fight, I just stated my opinion and DIDN'T talk bad about anyone. Ya'll were just smartasses cuz I'm female and know a little bit about a man's sport. Sorry to be here, I won't return and make you look more ignorant than you already have.

Call or write ASE they can custom program a chip
for you for about $400 - $450.

A dealer can not flash an ASE Chip or detect it.

They made one for me for the custom cam I am
running with the 1.7 RR's

Look Chic, your first post starts out with "bullsh*t" and then when I post an opinion that doesn't sync with yours, you call me a boob. Yeah, you were a perfect Angel. Did you ever think that maybe our standards for what a tuned engine is might be a little different than yours?

Larry, I believe with the ASE deal they actually unsolder your existing chip and re-solder in a new one. That's a little too "hackish" for my tastes and we have better options available now. We have access to software tuners that can reprogram right through the diag port. No need to even remove the PCM in this case.

Question for Dak Chick only
Just off the top of my head, whats the difference, if any, between shifting a transmission manually @ 4900 ---or---
leaving it in drive and letting the computer shift for you at 4900. ?

Alright Graphite R/T, I'll hit ya up tomorrow about some options. We all need to ease up on the insults. Dak Chick, I think women in the sport are great, but i think you might come across a bit rouugh around the edges. More props to ya on your truck though. I live in central Tx, so its get 112 degrees in the summer, with humidity in the 96% range also. Not exactly weather that is great for good ET's. Thanks agin for the input Graphite R/T. I will contact you tomorrow. I just sold my ATI Procharged stang 2 weeks ago, so the Dakota might get similar treatment.

Yes they do solder the chip in but they will give
you what you want on the chip

I agree the programmer is an option but its just
a program for 93 oct fuel you cant change timing,
or pulse width, you are stuck with what they use.

All the stuff you would like to play with.

They do let you change some settings so I
guess it is some what better.

With my higher stall converter and an experimental
cam for the 1.7 rockers I had special needs that
only they could give me. I could not get KRC or
Kenny Bell to flash my stock unit to my specs.
ASE was happy to do it.

And it worked out great.

Hey Dak Chick, I dont think anyone was bashing you in the post, you kind of just started saying that yourself. You are the one that called your truck "bullsh*t", you are the one that said you didnt know stuff, because you're just a girl, and you were the one that thought someone was not believing what your truck can do just because you are a girl. I dont think that graphiteRT cared whether it was a girl or a guy posting, they were just trying to state their opinion on a question somebody had. Its great that you do mods to your truck and that you are knowledgable with vehicles, but dont go start blaming people that they were bashing you because you are a girl when they werent the one to even bring it up.
