Subject: Nitrous Experience?

I have a 93 Dakota Extended cab with a 5.2 Magnum in which has a 160K miles on it. I have custom dual exhaust, Mopar Performance computer, Shift kit (A518 Auto), K&N air filter, 3.92 geared posi 8 1/4 rear, and Nitrous Express system. I run 150hp shots of nitrous at the track and run 13.5 et at 101 mph on street tires. My question is does anybody have experience in using nitrous on the earlier Dakotas like mine? I want to step up with a little bit more nitrous and run some drag tires to see if i can get into the 12's before i blow my 100% stock untouched magnum motor sky high. I will be racing my Dak in it's present form at the Mopar Atlantic Nationals at Old Bridge Raceway Park (Englishtown) N.J. on Sunday June 1st. Anybody else going?

Get a timing retard system and you should be able to add some more N2O.

2 stage would really help you but theres considerable cost involved.

Good luck and hit those 12's!!

Do you know of a certain brand of timing retard system that is out there available for our trucks? At the present time i run some racing fuel mixed in my gas when i use the 150hp shot of nitrous because of the advanced timing of the hp computer.
Any info is much appreciated...Thanks!

The MSD Digital 6+ ignition system is an excellent choice for N2O kits. It comes with a timing adjuster that only activates when your nitrous system is on, plus dual spark limiters.

You can buy it from Summit Racing or Jeg's

So far everything is holding up strong even though it has 160K miles on it. I,m going to look into the MSD 6+ Ignition system to retard the timing to make it safer...then probably hit it with 200hp shot and see what happens to my stock engine. If i blow it up i'm not too worried cause i am just finnishing a 408 stroker engine to replace the 318. I will back the 408 with a race prep 727 auto trans with a manual reverse valve body. I also have a 8 3/4 rear with 4.10 gears with custom axles for the 6 bolt pattern wheels to wrap up the future powertrain, but i just want to see how fast my stock engine can go on nitrous before giving up.

What do you have your timing set at with the
150 hp shot?

Are you running colder than stock plugs?

If not, back off your base timing 3 or 4 degrees
and drop a couple of heat ranges on your
plugs. Going from 150 to 200 shouldn't be
that major of a jump.

101 seems kinda slow for a 150 shot. What
does it mph at off the bottle?

Also, a bottle heater and pressure gauge will
work wonders if you don't already have one.

The timing is not adjustable by the distributor like the old engines. If you turn the distributor on a magnum motor you throw off the cam sensor to crank sensor timing, which in turns causes the computer to fire the injectors off time. I already tried that ounce and it also set a code in my computer. The computer has complete control of timing and the computer i have is the Mopar Performance one. It has more advanced timing than the stock one. I was going to go and purchase a stock computer to use with the nitrous but now i am looking into the MSD system to handle retarding timing during nitrous use. I dont use the nitrous right off the line cause of tire spin ...instead i wait until about 30 ft to use it. Without nitrous the truck runs 14.9 et's at 90 mph.

Zakly DakRacer!!

Only adjustment we have is "indexing" the distributor.
Theres a TSB out for that but its only to get it right where it needs to be.

Ive been lookin and it looks like the MSD 6+ is a decent unit for a N2O'er, ordered one for my Dak today.
I cant fugure out why some say they use the 6btm, looks to me like it retards from a boost sensor and you know us N2O'ers have no boost.

That's right, my bad, I remember now. What
about the plugs?

You shouldn't be running platinum, just
regular resistor plugs.

Forget about the MSD crap, get a stock
computer, install the 200hp jets and hopefully
see about 107 in the quarter.

i think with the 200 shot you might want a higher volume fuel pump... you would probably be starving those fuel injectors if not.

well i will see what happens at the Mopar Nationals on June 1st. I'll run 150hp shot for most of the day, then on the last run i will run 200hp shot. I'll just use premium fuel and race fuel mixture again like i do at Atco raceway. Afterall, i have my replacement powertrain waiting for use. I just have to get good tires quick!!!!

well i am just giving you some advice from family experience... my brother had a very nice 79' Z28 and ran a 150 shot on it all day... ran consistant 7.5s (1/8) and then decided to go for the 200 shot and lost over a second off the time... messed a lot of stuff up with that move.

Thanks for the advice. I want to see what it takes to kill the engine on purpose, cause i have a stroker 408cid magnum engine and race 727 automatic trans and A-body 8 3/4 rear to replace the powertrain just waiting to go in. Just curious how much my 160K mile stock 5.2 will take before it stops. My 408 is built to handle 250hp shots of nitrous with no problem.....I do want to figure out a ignition system by the time i put it in though.....the MSD unit is looking pretty good so far.
