a guy i met told me how to make my own cold air in take, he sait to just remove teh air box and buya pipe or hose that would fit into the air tube that was connected between the engine and air box and just stick a cone filter on the end of it. Would that work?

Not everyone has 150$ for a intake.

bro go to Home depot and get 3 inch PVC black pipe. get some 90* elbows and mabey 45* They have rubber couplers you can get there also.

I wouldnt worry about it too much the hood stays closed anyway. it works great and its cheap to make. i made one one time ( before they had air intakes for the 4.7) and it worked great. If I still had it I would give it to you with the K&N Filter.
For abotu 50$ you can get a air intake made and that includes the air filter

The way i see it is if it makes it faster then dont worry about the look for now.Looks dont mean $hit when you are racing.I can find alot more important things to spend $200 on. I personally would rather be fast and ugly than slow and pretty 2003 R/T

Yeah, but PVC pipe does not and will not last that long in an engine bay (compared to actual warm air intakes). When it does break down, you'll be introducing extremely toxic chemicals into the atmosphere (through your engine), and if you breath these fumes in, you could severely damage your lungs (or God forbid, it'll kill you). Think about that the next time you crank up your truck.

OK, that does it....Damn.

There are many, many people posting on this and other dodge forums that have found good gains and ZERO problems with a PVC intakes. I am one of them.

I dont really care how much a mod is, but if I can do the SAME thing at a third of the cost of an over the counter part then so be it.

You will NOT get the PVC hot enough to melt under your hood if you use common sense. Nor will "toxic" fumes kill you. The exhaust will kill you without plastic intakes...gezz... BTW, isnt the stock air hat and every other aftermarket kit made of plastic tubing that is thinner than schedule 40 PVC? Um yes...

And dont people flame you on here if you use metal z pipes due to the heat they absorb...yes they do.

I am a licenced irrigator. PVC is nothing more than poly vinyl chloride. Just plastic with high amounts of vinyl to remain slightly flexible. ABS pipe will give off fumes if burned. I "glue" PVC pipe together every day with a solvent which "melts" two pieces together. Im still alive.

Go search the web for "potato guns". There are several sites out there. They basicly use large PVC pipe, apply pressure (100 psi or so), open a valve, shooting a potato 300 feet! You can also build one with a chamber to fill with hair spray. You IGNITE! the hair spray, and shoot the potato that way.

If PVC scares you that much, Home Depot also carries very thin 3" metal rigid vent duct that perfectly fits inside 3" PVC pipe and acts as a sleeve. These used together will cause no melting, no cracking, no more argument.....

Now, can we lay this stupid ass argument to rest. PVC isnt nearly as dangerous as you modding you truck to race on the street.
Damn....

My homebrew cost $25 and works perfect. It looks good too. I've had nothing but compliments on it. You leave your stock airbox or buy some cheap piece of crap for a couple hundred dollars and I'll keep my $25 HP builder.

according to Daksmack mustard gas will not kill you! you see daksmack something you never learned in high school chemistry is that when PVC gets up to around 120 or so degrees it starts to give off chlorine gas, what is better known as mustard gas, due to it's yellow color. Many men died durring WW1 by breathing that stuff. But... according to you it don't kill!!!!! You guys that want to do this,,,, use CPVC or the black plastic, you will live much longer!

Yeah, Ill use cpvc. Thats a good idea. Oh wait, we were trying to save money right? The last cpvc I purchased was an $8.00 1-1/2 inch threaded coupling. That FIPK kit dont sound so bad now.

Id rather just have mustard gas (?, whatever) under the hood and not wrap my lips around the tail pipe.

Hey, at least I dont smoke. Chemistry teach you what was in cig's?

I cant believe people bash this idea with out 1 ounce of bad reviews from it. It reminds my why I dont post on here much. Everyone here will argue with a fence post.
