Subject: change gears or tire size?

Message:
i have a dakota with the 4.7 auto with 3.55. It has the stock 265/70 R16 tires. Will going to a smaller tire that is 255/55 R17 yeild similar results if i change my axle ratio to 3.92 ratio? I'm looking for better acceleration. I want to buy the R/t rims anyway. My truck is a 4x4 and changing axle gears will be expensive. I bought the 4x4 not for off roading but because of the crazy winters here up north.

Yes, changing to smaller tires is the same as changing to a lower gear ratio.

Do a search, there's a formula around here somewhere to calculate tire size/actual gear ratio.

Effective Gear Ratio Change

Rearend ratio with 265/70 R 16's 3.55
Rearend ratio with 255/55 R 17's 3.87

The help from the lower gear ratio will be cancelled out by the extra wight from the R/T wheels.

Why would the weight of the R/T wheel make a difference? I'm dropping from a 31" to a 28" tire. If anything i would think that the tires i have now weigh more than a 28". Has anyone else done this to increase performance?

It's not the tires that woudl weigh more, it's the wheel. The R/T rim/tire combo is 62lbs stock. Not sure what your stock combo wieghs, but I'd be willing to bet it's less than 62lbs. And that is all rotational weight which affects performance more than hung weight.
