It's the catalytic converter. I've got a 99 Dak and I'm on my third one. No one seems to know why. I really like the truck, but there are a few gremlins that persist. Like the check engine, ABS and brake lights. I also have a mysterious noise that sounds like a sticky lifter but its not, and it doesn't change with the RPMs. Go figure.

Does your engine misfire a lot? What plugs are you running? Have you ever replaced the plug wires? Rotor & cap? What is your fuel mileage like?

Misfires are sometimes hard to detect but if you have a cylinder that misses every other time at 2000 on the highway, that dumps a lot of raw fuel in the cat and that will destroy it very quickly.

I would replace the plugs (don't do the AutoLite 3923 thing, it's bogus) wires, cap and rotor and see what that does for you. You might want to have the up and down stream O2 sensors checked as well. Can't hurt.

The tick could be the fan clutch or the serpentine belt tensioner. Again, ticks can be hard to pinpoint. The ABS light comes on when there is a malfunction in the ABS system...have the wheel sensors checked.

I had the same catalytic converter problem with my 98 Ram 5.2L. It failed 5 times in less than 40,000 miles. I also had the check engine light, ABS and brake light problems. They replaced the entire emmissions system, the Cat was replaced all 5 times, and the computer all under factory warranty.
The last time it happened I dropped the truck off at the dealer. They replaced the cat and called me to pick it up. I refused to pick it up and called a lawyer. The lawyer made 1 call and mentioned "lemon law". The dealer called me back and offered to buy the truck from me at top dollar and sell me anything else on the lot for cost minus any rebates as long as I do'nt pursue the lemon law avenue. They gave me 12K for my old truck and I only owed 8K. I took a brand new Dakota R/T and have'nt had a problem yet with the Dak. They never did know why my truck kept having bad catalytic converters. In fact, I saw a whole pile of the converters behind the Dodge Dealership, so I suspect its a common problem. They put the truck for sale on their used car lot the next day so some other sorry b*stard will inherit those problems. Too bad for them.
