Here's somebody's chance.

CW? Canucker? Xplikt?

Somebody has taken the work out of it for you.

Inspector Duner...Everything look OK with the setup? Looks like a Vortech FMU he's running with it.

Looks good to me. Looks like somebody did their homework.

Total custom one-off job. The guy contacted Duner and mimicked his set-up. Didn't have it set up correctly on the fuel side and roasted his motor.

Read the fine print. All you're bidding on there is the turbo, wastegate, oil lines & filters. The rest of it will have to be purchased separately.

I talked to him on the phone for about 1 1/2 hours one nite and I think that the turbo he's selling makes boost too low in the rpm band. The computer can't handle it because the turbo is making 7 psi at 2000 rpm while the computer is still in closed loop mode. Be sure to do the research on the compressor map of this unit.

I saw it on ebay too and dropped him an email, I think I'll stay away from it since I don't know enough about how to set-up properly but the price seems like a good deal for someone competent. Here is his email response to my questions:

Tuning issues??????? hmmmmmmm I took it off when I took out some ring lands..due to detonation..... its a very long story...very long!!! did I say that yes it is custom ....I'll send u a couple of pix of it installed on the truck ... very long story... short ......built the system ran it ,,it smoked ....BAD
(Oil) thought it was the turbo..wasn't.. it was my oil drain location ,,sucking oil through PCV unhooked pcv put bigger injectors in (24#) ran good still slight detonation....think the damage was already done due to the oil issue.... screwed around to long without proper tune up......find out the hard way the 4.7 pistons r weak... top ring land ..paper thin hmmmmmm tear motor down very frustrated but not totally surprised..knew the risks with an untested venture....discouraged!!!! went a whole new route...(no turbo) yes I gave up!!! put HO pistons ,cams ,cleaned up the heads HO intake custom exhaust yet again...kenne bell computer tune... and now a little spray goin on it ...its not quite what the turbo could have been but really didnt want to sink anymore money to try and tune the seemingly untunable bullsh!t chrysler ...sorry I was goin off......really though all told I have about $3300 to do the turbo deal... and thats with me building the whole system....the turbo the wastegate BOV filters and ass. plumbing and hardware to bolt on your 4.7..........????? minus any fuel crap other than injectors..I'd like to get $1800 .....If your serious get back to me otherwise don't please...... this is already to winded so I'll shut up now .........Peace! till then...

It's really not even serious tweaking..... the guy skipped a step when copying Duner's set-up and it messed up his motor. The oil return line he created was located right in the same area as the PCV valve. That way, the motor was sucking the oil from the turbo drain line back into the cylinders.

Oil + Boost = Disaster

So, what you need is a certain custom chunk of aluminum that Duner fabricated on his own, and anyone else could, too. You'd just have to make your own template.

Other than that, I might get the turbo head unit re-fitted to make full boost at a little bit higher rpm. $1800 is a hell of a deal, but I just don't have the cash to back it up right now....

It's not like he's marketing a street proven quality setup. The guy put some blood, sweat, and tears into the thing.

He did his homework, he just got a little ahead of himself.

i can tell you first off the oil return line is to small. the return is a gravity return i started my truck up with out the throttle body tube off and it smoked like a crop duster. oil was being pushed out the compressor and the turbin side there are no seals (conventional rubber)in a turbo they are more like washers the slightest back pressure will make it leak. i changed to a 3/4 return line without any loops or twist and the problem was solved as for the block i took the oil fill neck off traced it on a 1 1/4" piece of aluminum block cut it out cross-drilled the return hole at the bottom threaded it done deal. the primary reason the pistons burnt is the fuel issue with no fmu no high pressure fuel pump pistons will burn! the computer will not sense boost it will try to trim the injectors back since the plunger on the map will be pushed in under boost making it think it is at idle. you could go with 75# injectors and it will not add any more fuel than it would at idle i use 24# cobra r injectors as the 2002 4.7 dakotas share the same part number with the oval connectors a 100psi 880 liter hr pump and a vortec 10:1 fmu the setup he has looks clean and the turbo is large enough to make plenty of boost without destroying stuff the pistons are not crap as noted earlier burning pistons will happen when precaution are not taken the tops are phosphoric anodized anyone familiar with this chem treat knows its hard stuff. harder than the parent material i build aircraft components this is the same treatment used on most of our parts ive said this many times RELIABLE DATA is what will get the job done. dont come to forums like this one if you expect to build something no-one else has. i hate to say it but the mustang sites have good info the 4.6 is a pretty close reletive to the 4.7 and id rather see fords get blown up from testing than a dakota. thanks for listening oh ya alex the posi works great a little rough around corners but what do you expect for 100% lock-up.

Turbo-enthusiasts....
this summer I'll be building a prototype turbo manifold for the 4.7 after I purchase a cost-effective turbo, and hopefully a ceramic ball unit. I plan to do the full build: forged pistons [9:1], o-ring the block, cams + valvesprings, KRC's laptop-interface Fuel/timing management system(full 3rd party), Electronic boost controller, racing style blow-off valve, good turbo timer (gotta make my e-brake work first! :) movin the radiator and condenser toward the motor 5" and puttin in a nice sized intercooler and settin up for a build that will hold 20 psi, but only plannin for 18 with the pressure drop.
When it all comes together I'm shootin for low 12's right off the bat, but with tuning and a nice shot of gas she should be mechanically/theoretically capable of mid 11's / Hi - MAYBE MID 10's!!! with the right cam/porting/Nitrous combination!! That would be AFTER nitrous of course! AND, the best part about this setup is the LAPTOP engine control system. You can plug it in, swith to a different file set up for street boost (7 psi) and actually get decent gas mileage with an 11 second truck!!!
ANY COMMENTS
If you don't believe it can happen, look at the 3.9 liter Dak with 2 turbos runnin a 10.9!! Automatic!! That means the 4.7 should be capable of faster times when built to handle the boost.
I figure I could even sell the kit for about $7500 WITH basic tuning files included (if you have a laptop) , maybe I could even throw in a laptop!! =)

Dude, Sweet Ride!!

That Graphite R/T is NICE.

About the FAST system, I've yet to research it further than the website info., but it seems to be a VERY hi quality and legit setup, and should incorporate everything needed for the Air/Fuel delilvery control as well as the timing retard/advance needs. It seems that the advance/retard is adjustable @ 500 rpm increments and might be a bit on the coarse side, but with the right:

fuel/intercooler/pistons/fuel injectors/fuel-pump/boost-controller/o-ring+good gaskets/pistons+rings+rods+bearings/balanced crank is optional depending on desired head porting and boost (peak hp/tq), it should be tunable enough to be safe into the 20 psi limit!

(a STOUT - A_S_S MOTOR!!)

About the Transmission:
Hmm, that old NV-3500 is Questionable to say the least, but I think the 45-Rfe with the re-program to use all 5 forward gears would be perfect with a shift kit, or maybe a unit from a 2500. I don't know much about transmissions except that it's better to have a good one in now than rebuild one later.
Duner is obviously running 400 hp/tq through his NV-3500 and has been for about a year now, and NO grenading, so it can be used over it's rating IF its driven right.
Due to the nature of trucks and wheelspin it seems that a-LOT of the initial impact of a 3000 rpm start is soaked up by wheelspin and clutch.
It's all something to definitely think about when attempting 600 hp at the wheels!! That should be good for mid 11's or hi 10's for sure!

im am vary interrested in this laptop you say this is from krc. i'v been looking for a laptop set-up i purchased a laptop for this only and havent even used it, hoping the software would be available. this has made my day thanks also i did not understand the part where you said decent gas milage. mine gets the same with the turbo as long as im not on boost the stock computer takes care of the ratios. BUT i would like to tune the under-boost mode of my driving cause the milage really gets bad but with everything you pay for what you get or was that get what you pay for lol thanx

Well,
Once you put in a 218 cam and do some pocket porting, the gas mileage will probably drop a little, but the option to run lean with the turbo turned WAY down is always there.

The motor itself will make 330+ hp in n/a form after all the mods are done , so don't expect to see 21 mpg anymore. More like 17 at best.

I also plan to get a little Civic for the commute too, but all this coming together will take some time. The manifold will come first. The electronics will come with time due to cost, and the hardware shouldn't be too bad to get together, even the tubing is not that intimidating a task, the main thing is matching the turbo to the flow of the reworked heads and cam.

It'll be ASAP though, and the KRC FAST system has an optional laptop interface for like $600 to program from in the cab. That extra $1000 makes it worth the money to be able to tune from in the cab.

Hey AZDAK, what kind of rig are you running? I'm about sick of stock heads, pistons, manifolds, etc. etc., it's gettin time.
