Are you going to do any other mods besides the cam?? If not, just get the new Mopar cam.

If you don't plan on doing ported heads, or any other bigger mods, you shoudl be fine with the Mopar R/T cam.

I had the R/T cam (458/467)in my Kota and was dissappointed with the upper mid range performance, it did not seem to be that much of an improvement from the stock 5.2L cam. I now have the KRC 206X and it screams! If you can stand a little "quiver" at idle the 206X is bad to the bone...If not go with the milder 206 which has more lift than the R/T cam. The 206 or 206X should idle fine in the larger 5.9L engine. The bottom end power seems to be about the same as stock till you get to about 3200 rpm then HANG-ON!! I also have the M-1 with ex/large turtle (highly recommended), M/P headers, Flowmaster catback, Shaker hood, Fastman T/B (50MM)and I pocket ported the stock heads with a 3 angle v/job. I love the sound of the 206X and the looks I get at the local cruise-n's when they hear the slight "lope" in the exhaust. The R/T cam idled like a stocker to me, the 206X sounds almost like the C/Cams 270H I have in my 72 340 Cuda. Hey, if I am going to go to all the trouble to replace the cam I want something I can hear!!

Here's a video of my truck doing a burnout at Banks Diesel last weekend--

Crower custom cam, Crower 1.7s, RT 1.92 non ported heads, PPH headers, M1-4bbl, F&B 52mm TB, GTS-2 hood w/airbox-- Proglass roll pan, and Ed Hanson exhaust... 290 rwhp.

I cheated to get the smoke show going, but it'll light them up (though not as much smoke) from a dead stop and not let up until mid way through 2nd gear if I just nail it from a stop.

Very streetable, no check eng. lights. Works great with N20 too :)

I just installed THe KRC 210x in my 97 318, I have many mods including 2.02 heads, m1 MP comp. I to had the R/T cam in my dakota and it was a complete waste of money, I gained only 3 tenths in the quarter. You will be much happier with a bigger cam and the idle is rough but not that bad. The cam pulls extremly hard all the way to the rev limiter at 5800. Its fun...

The X cams have tight Lobe seperation angles to boost mid range torque at the expense of idle Quality (personal preference), lower vacuum for acessories (a little loss is ok). Also lowers mpg and raises emissions that some of us have to worry about :(

What is the biggest/aggressive 318 cam that anyone ever past emissions with?

Nick, is your 97 5.2L a 2wd auto?? What computer are u using?? I can just imagine how bad to the bone the 210X sounds, the 206X has just a slight shake at idle and it idles even better with the A/C on. I just love to see that shaker "shake"!!

I think this was brought up before....but is passing emissions w/ the KRC 220 cam an issue. I want that "big ol lumpy" cam sound. What is a good setup? I plan on doing alot of work on this motor this summer (its bone stock). Any advice would be appreciated.

Yea, that lightning killer pkg is the ticket but I didn't have the $$$ at the time to go that far. I already had a complete 360 from a 99 Ram truck and if I get too "bored" with the 318 I will go ahead and "stroke" the 360. My original desire was to put the 408 in my 72 340 Cuda as soon as the $$$ allows. Hell, in the early 70's we street raced a 68 Cuda with a roller cam that makes these cams look mild by comparison, i drove the car to work some days but it was a challenge to keep the old holleys from fouling the plugs. I just love that "rumpity rump" sound!! I'm finally starting to get back into the hot rod scene after a long dry spell... You know..marriage, divorce, kids, marriage. Not necessarily in that order..

Red99R/T,

I think if your building a 408 it would be ok, but in anything less the 220+ cams and the 210X cam will have problems passing the sniffer. I have been around this board for over a year haven't been able to get an answer to any hard question yet.

RED97KOTA, I have a 5spd, and I am currently running the MP computer. I doesn't seem to mind the 210X cam at all. The idle is awesome. Have you switched your vaccum lines from the map to the intake to see if it improves idle?

Yea, thats the way I have it now. The idle is not bad in my opinion. It just has that healthy quiver that I really love. It idles almost like my 72 Cuda 340 which has a C/Cams 270H hydraulic. It pulls almost as hard too, especially from 3200 up. The only difference is that I can rev my Cuda to 6500 with no worry about a rev limit!! I am using a computer that a friend had on his 97 that has a custom flash which may be the way I go since M/P does not make a computer for the 97 Auto's as far as I know... I don't know why more people don't change the cams in these Kota's, the factory cam is a joke for mid-upper rpm power and the tradeoff's are minimal. (Mine seems to have the same lower end it did before)
