Subject: can u start engine w/o valve covers?

just like the subject says...ive got rattling coming from the motor, and id like to see if its from the rockers, can i start the motor w/o the valve covers on?

You probably can. But you'll most likely have a big oil mess to clean up.

Yes you can do it, I did when I installed my 1.7 RR's, Just start it and let it idle, DON'T touch the gas or it will shoot oil out the push rod ends. lay some rags on your inside wheel wells to catch any oil splatter you will get 1 or 2 wild squirts when it first starts up then it settles down pretty quick

you can do it... shouldnt be as big as a mess as a 350 chebby puts out because our trucks just "drizzle" the oil out of the pushrods... unlike the chebby.

Intense is right, i installed my 1.7's this way, just started it up and no oil mess at all, easy to adjust while doing this too hehe

The old chevy trick take a stock valve cover cut the top out, it will control the oil flow, then you can adjust your lifters with it running.

your problem sounded like maybe you have a exhaust leak Afi... check all your manifold bolts for tightening.
