 Subject: Whats best way to make my R/T faster?

I plan on spending around $1000 this summer on performance parts for my 1999 Dakota R/T. I would like to make it faster in the 1/4 mile time and 0-60 time. So far, my engine is pretty much stock except for a K&N cold air intake and Flowmaster exhaust. What should i buy to make it faster? what type/brand? And help would be great! Thanks,

For a serious answer, I'd start with a Mopar PCM, ported TB, and Mopar 2bbl M1.

Matt, the best way to get faster is to take your $1,000 and get in on some of the great deals dealers are offering right now and get a real performance truck. Like the Lightning. If you put the money into your Dak, you may as well through your money into the toilet!

With $1,000 I would get 15x8 Durango wheels and mount some 26" DOT slicks on them , a MP 2,400 stall converter , MP PCM , and have a cutout welded in place of the stock cat , and a better Y pipe fabbed up if you can swing it.
Before you go to the track yank the sway bars , spare , and tailgate.
Later down the road an M1 , 52mm TB , headers w/3" exhaust should be considered.

good point made by the last person. slicks when you go to the track is a good thing to have so you can launch at 1700rpm and not worry about spinning the tires. id go with headers, roller rockers, and a chip of some sort, PCM would be the best one. i think you would be happy with those 3.

Roller rockers would set him back $700 before installing them.

I love it , F-150 got no response to his post here.
$1000 bux , hmmmm ,I would say....
M1 2 brl.
&
headers.
Those 2 made the most difference for me.
The throttle body and PCM didnt do much.

big_torque, what oder did you install your parts though?? You won't notice much of a difference with each one individually, but if the headers and M1 were the last things to go on, then you would notice more of a different than if you didn't have the TB and PCM. You need one to make the other work good.

thanks guys for the responses, but i dont think i'm gonna get nitrous and run the piss outta it and sell it, LOL. I laughed my ass off when i read that, its not a bad idea, but i'm happy with my R/T.
So a 50mm F&B TB wont help me out? would a Mopar PCM help alot? i have heard it would and it wont, which is it? Also, are Edelbrock headers any good? i was thinking of getting those. those on a 5.9 would gain AT LEAST 8.3 hp and 10.2 lbs/ft torque. Thanks

Valve covers -$125
Misc -$100
Thats $575. Im sure there is something else missing.

turboguy, you dont need new valve covers or whatever misc. is. Just knock the baffles or push them in on the stock covers... will work fine.

yeah but the covers would be the easier way and nicer way to do it.
i have the 1.7s on my V6 and just took the baffles out. On a couple of V8s i have just bent the baffles up. On another guys we just put the mopar covers on them... it looked the best of course

I removed the baffles from my stock covers when I installed the Crower 1.7s and they leaked like a sieve, I even installed Moroso bolt in baffles, it helped but still leaked until I put the Mopar covers on.

anyone want to go fast for cheap you know what to use NOS. why spend 1000s of $$ on twin turbos, single turbos with intercoolers, when you can spend about $800 on a safe NOS system, that wont hurt your engine and go faster than a turbo!! firgure that out!!

The question was asked about how far $1000 would go. Although I dont like to use nitrous as a primary power adder..it is cheap and fairly simple to install.
Now if Matt had asked "What power adders are my money best spent on?"...then turbos would be my first answer.

I did these in this order
K&N FIPK & cut open flap (got 7 rwhp (g-tech))
Gibson 3" single -nothing(sounds good though)
Mopar headers - good improvement,awesome midrange
Quick D TB - nuttin really
Wires,cap,rotor- nuttin (didnt expect anything)
180stat - runs cooler
Mobil 1 syntheic - nuttin (didnt expect anything)
MP PCM - felt nothing ,ran .2 sec slower at track , made it run too rich on dyno , very disappointed
Catco hiflow cat- drones bad , too loud in cab
Relocate IAT - maybe a little
M1 2 bbl with turtle- OH YEAH !
Roe racing controller- i dunno , i guess it helped lean it out a little on top
Indexed plugs -- nuttin really , but fun project
Well , thats the story of my truck.

turbos would be the way to go if you can afford them. I have spent about $400-500 on turbocharging my truck. Its pretty darn fast for a V-sux that isnt tuned. The only thing i am lacking is FMU and bigger pump.. which would be about another $400 more.

I already posted what I go fast on. Ill be the first to admit, Im not going to dump $35k into a truck, so it can be a turd. Id rather have a reliable, high hp street vehicle..than a full on race car or truck.
Ultimately..you have to realize your goals. If you wanna go 10secs in a 4 wheeled vehicle..its costs money. I find it amusing when guys dump $2k, 3, 4 or even more in a car to go 1/2 second faster or pickup 2mph. Thats a joke.

I find it amusing that anybody would boast about how fast they can make a motorcycle go when they start out quick already. BFD! So you can go fast on a motorcycle. If you haven't noticed this is a truck forum!?! The original poster asked a legitimate question. He doesn't need some dumb-ass jerk telling him that his money goes farther on a motorcycle. Turboguy needs to go out and explore the speed-wobble phenomenon and get back to us after hi-siding thru the traps into the guardrail. If he lives he should come back and tell us all what a bargain his motorcycle performance was. We won't even go into what happens when some senile old lady makes a left hand turn in front of his reliable hi-hp street vehicle. Can you say roadkill? I knew you could.

I've heard the PCM made a few different people run slower because it richened the mixture too much. Not sure why it affects some and not others. I definitly felt a difference with the PCM, and the removal of the speed limiter was well worth the price. I also felt the most difference with the 2bbl M1, but I don't think you woudl have noticed it as much if it were the first mod. I think it took all the other stuff to make the M1 show the gains you felt. I'm sure if you woudl have done the 2bbl before the headers, the headers woudl have been the miracle mod.

i aint talking bout my truck. my truck prolly runs a 14 something. i realize that my rt is my daily driver. so im not modifying it to much. cuz i allready have one race car in the garage i dont need 2.
