hitting the track tommarow, I'll be on street tires so any advice?

Truck:
00' R/T cc

Mods:
Powerdyne 6# Blower
Fastman TB
MSD-6 BTM
Gibson Catback

some other lil' stuff but anyhow give me some tips! I was thinking about rolling around till I had just a little gas left but on these nitto's would the extra weight of a full tank help me hook up quicker? I haven't tuned my engine hard-core and I'm having some fmu issues, sometimes she runs rich but what 1/8 and 1/4 times should I be shooting for? mid 13's?

thanks guys,
-m

if you can, ask them not to spray in water in the water box and DONT do a burnout. Now if they do, do a burnout just long enough to get the water off the tires. Radial tires loose their ability to grip when they are heated up. Slicks are made out of a poly%^#%@#$% something that gets sticky when heated...

thanks man, yeah I'm going to practice my powerbrake launches tonight. I'll stay out of the water if possible, I've never even been to this track as a visitor so I'm not sure of the routine here. Here's what i've gathered so far from the boards...

-Turn overdrive off

-On stock tires avoid the water

-Powerbrake up to 1000-1300

-On third yellow ease of the brake and get the throttle down to the floor as fast as possible w/o breaking loose then keep it there.

what do you think of my recipe so far?

thanks,

yeah man I'm most concerned with my launch, I know my reaction time is crucial but I'm worried that I'll be so pumped that I'll give it too much and screw the run up. practice, practice, practice, I guess but man I'm stoked.

I don't think the time starts until you cross the line.
Some of the tips that I have read for a first time out say to let the light go green then go.
you will still get a good time, just your reaction time will be crap. but who cares.
just try and keep those tires from spinning and let the S/C do the reset.

My buddy does some great power break starts in his 3/4 ton diesel. that thing is like a freight train. 14 second truck.

good luck and let us know it goes.
My first day will be the 25th of this month.

figitdotcom,

I wouldn't recommend launching at 1300, maybe a 1000. On my single cab, I launch a tad bit higher than idle (700 or so) and wheel spin is not too bad. Any rpms above this gave me too much wheel spin and horrible 60 footers. You do have better weight distribution with your clubcab so you might have better luck launching at higher rpms. Good luck!

If they'll let you, I recommend you get them to let you make your first pass alone.

My first time at the track I got lined up by fate with some horribly suped up 5.0, fella lifted his wheels 6 inches or so for the first ~15-20 feet, scared the living crap out of me, I panicked and just stomped it, rung in something like a 2.78 60' and a 19.66 1/4 mile time, spun so so so much. You'll be much less nervous without someone launching on two wheels next to you :)

I as someone else said would recomend trying to launch a few times from idle. Everyone's truck is different, you might find you can launch like a bat out of hell from idle, but can't even hook up from launching at 1000, so on your first night, don't pick a method and stick with it, try as many different combinations as you can, then next time at the track stick with one of those combos and try to perfect it.

Other than that, listen to Intensedak99, you don't get a V6 to go that fast without knowing someone that everyone else doesn't :)

sounds good, man I'm thinking about maybe taking a day off next week and spending the whole damn day @ the track. I don't know how the schedule works but yeah I see what your saying, it would be hard to pay attention with someone next to me sounding like they are entering earths atmosphere. Are tracks usually open during week days.... my brother in law whose coming with me said it will be like 12 bucks tommarow night, do you think that's for a block of time or could I run all day for 12 bucks? Ey thanks again for all the tips guys.

I am considering going to the track this coming wednesday and was wondering as well how i should launch. I have a 91 R/C with the 318 and 3.55 sure grip rear end. I am running worn goodyear wrangler at/s with about 1/8" to 1/4" of tread remaining. should i do a burn out or should i just line it up and go? also is it best to shift for the trans and run it with o.d. off? Also what are the possibilities of me breaking something? i have just over 100,000mi and have had no major problems

Thanks

At houston raceway on friday's it's 15 bucks for the whole night, should be for most places too. And, different tracks have different schedule, see if yours has a website or ask some of the workers there, they'll know.

91dakotafreak:
I would let the tranny shift on it's own unless you're fairly well modded. If you're stock or close to stock, you probably won't get much out of those higher RPM's anyways. Turn overdrive off though. As for possibility of breaking things, just too many factors there, if it's been maintained real well it could go on for another 100,000 miles, or it could fall apart when a butterfly lands on it tonight, just depends on the shape it's in. Racing anything puts it under a lot of stress, if you start to notice something that doesn't seem right that you think could be a potential problem, even if you're on your way down the track, just slow down and take your time to the end if you feel necessary. It might hold the people behind you up a bit longer, but I don't think anyone is going to get mad at you for being cautious not to break stuff.

A few other things that might help would be to manually shift the 2/3 shift at 5400 rpm's if you have a Mopar PCM, if not then manually shift at 5000rpm's. Also as soon as you shift to 3rd gear start pushing the O/D button on the shifter repeatedly, this will prevent the TC from locking up in 3rd gear and is usually good for a tenth.

launch just off idle, and heres a little trick for street tires, run 40-45 psi in the front at the track, decreases rolling resistance, run your rear tires at your regular pressure, no matter what anyone says, they are street tires, they will not hook any better by decreasing air pressure, if anything add a couple pounds after a few runs, trust me, i have been around drag racing all my life, and the biggest mistake is guys treating street tires like slicks, they aren't so don't treat them like that, street tires have absolutely none of the same properties that slicks or dot drag tires have, so just my few words of caution...........

yeah I was thinking about waxing my truck, I'm also going to piss beforehand. I brushed off like 2 grams of brake dust on the fronts bro so that along with the 3 moths I plucked from my grille should shave off some time for sure then at lunch while slowly rolling in the parking lot I slammed on my brakes, figure I shook off a good deal of dust. When I get home I'm going to do the ol' trusty wrap tape around your hand de-lint trick on my seats.

I found a heavy a$$ peanut under my front floormat last night, I had my windows cracked so I think this rat-bastard in the tacoma next door is trying to sabatoge me.. I'm keeping an eye on him. I kept the peanut though, if I'm up against a lightning or something tonight I'll toss the heavy a$$ peanut in his truckbed... granted he'll hook better, all that xtra weight will kill his top end though.
