Hear recently I have jus gotten in from college and I have been driving my dakota a lot. the other day I noticed that when i reached about 2800 through 3500 I heard some kind of rattle in the engine almost like the valves were rattling. I was wondering if this is the pinging noise that you guys say is fixed by the 180 degree thermostat, mine currently is the stock 195. I mean she runs like a champ but that noise sounds awfull!!! Thanks for any help!!!!

That is about what pinging sounds like. If you are using 87 octane try 89 or even a tank of 93 to see if that gets rid of the noise.

Well when I bought it it had 10w 40 oil in it but for some reason me and my dad put 30 weight in it. I don't think that makes a difference would it????????

I had almost the same "rattling" problem with my truck a few weeks ago. Turned out to be a loose heat shield below the firewall. Check that first...(I had a few small rocks stuck in there which caused it to rattle.)

Could be a mis fireing plug. If this were the case you would be hearing compression knock.

Check the oil level.
and now that you mentioned it, 30 weight is too heavy, it should be 5W30 or 10W30.
