Message:
hey guys, i had a couple of quick questions. i just purchased an R/T cam for my '02 5.9 QC and was wondering about some things on the installation. it is my understanding that i can bolt in the new cam with out the need for any new parts(besides the new gaskets), my question is this, what all setting will i need to change when doing this? will i need to adjust my valves, or can i get away with the stock settings?

i bought the cam from KRC, while they were helpful in answering my questions, i didn't remember to ask about this particular topic. anyone care to shed any light?

Normally I'd suggest new lifters and springs. However, with your truck being pretty new, you're probably okay. You should be able to install it and go.

Why the R/T cam?? I tried that cam and was unimpressed but that was on a 5.2L. May be be a better choice on the 5.9L. I went to the KRC 206X which is a Comp Cams, its ground on 108 degree centers and does not have a silky smooth idle but it idles fine and that slight "hot cam" sound really gets attention at the local cruise in's!!
Plus it almost has the same feel as my 340 Cuda from 2500 rpm up...It's a bad to the bone cam choice for those of you that want to be a little on the edge but don't want to give up driveability.

because i picked it up for $100, the cam you're talking about is around $400. plus, i was told it'd be a 10rwhp bolt on, and would be great when i started in with more mods. at $100, that's $10/hp, pretty good price if you ask me.

also, my trucks still pretty new, i don't want to get to far from stock just yet.

I LOVE the cam, its got a sound that is nothing short of awesome! A friend has the same basic cam thats ground on the 114 degree center and it idles much better but this cam will smoke him big time!! Don't get me wrong this cam idles real good but it has just a bit of roughness at idle but not enough to be effect the power accessories or the MAP sensor. It has unreal torque from 2500 up and it pulls like my 340 Cuda!! I had the motor apart because of timing chain replacement and went ahead and pulled the intake to find the plenum chamber gasket blown. I then decided to go ahead and get the M-1 intake and do the cam swap. It was not that hard and I can't believe more people don't have the guts to dig into a motor that deep. Its not rocket science and the results are nothing short of fantastic! I also did a pocket port on the heads with the D/C "062" springs and retainers. I got the D/C headers and F/M 19lb injectors that a friend got me from a late model wreck. I'm currently using a hand ported throttle body and stock PCM but the PCM seems to have adjusted fine after about 100 miles. If you don't mind an engine with a little bit of "quiver" at idle this cam is the ticket!! Marty at KRC highly recommended it and he was dead on!!

Red97Kota,

Where does the power band fall off? I want a cam that will run to about 5500rpms or so(which means peak power will need to be between 5000-5200). I'll probably be shifting somewhere around 5500. At what rpm do you shift?

I'm considering the cam you purchased (206X)or the 206, but living in Cali the X version might fail smog testing. Do you have to deal with a sniffer test?

Just an FYI-- My cam (custom grind from Crower) runs 5450 rpm peak HP, 3800 peak torque...

.512/.512, 208-204 duration... 111 CL... Short duration, high lift (based on 1.7 ratio rockers), requires high flow exhaust/headers---

I'm running 290 rwhp, 325 ft. lbs. of torque. No miss fire codes, nice idle (fffromp ffromp frrromp)---

Thanks for the information Sam! I'm also considering a crower cam, so I was just about to shoot you an email. Unfortunately I need to purchase headers before the cam, so the cam will have to wait. My new heads, m1 & F&B need to breathe out, these stock exhaust manifolds are seriously restricting my top end.

I know you sell headers, but how much for the ceramic coated version?

I don't know where it will fall off cause I still have the factory RPM limited pcm. It shifts at around 4900 the best I can tell and it's still pulling hard at that point. I would think it would pull all the way to 6000, especially since it's ground on the tighter 108 degree centerline. I think it would idle better and have better low end in the 5.9L than it does in my 5.2L but it will still fry the tires even with the stock converter. We don't have sniffer tests here or any car inspection program. At what rpm do they test the emissions??
