Subject: R/T How to read engine codes??
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1999 Dakota R/T with 15,000 Miles MODS: Mopar PCM, Mopar Cold Air Intake, Kenne Belle Pulleys & Wires, MBRP Catback W/Cuda Tips & Flowmaster 40 Series, and I just install Mopar Headers And Y-Pipe. I have had the headers on for about 200 Miles and all of a sudden the engine light came on. How do I read the code?? I hear you can pull the code by simply cycling the key?? Can someone give me details on that, also does this have anything to do with the headers do you think??

Turn key to ON position (not start) then OFF. Do this 3 times. Then turn it to ON again and leave it there. Codes should show up on your odometer.

I`m pretty sure thats how you do it.

Someone correct me if I`m wrong

I've noticed it can be a pain sometimes but try driving it around and right when you stop do it 3 times after you've turned the ignition off. Don't do it too fast but don't be slow about it either.

It will not work for 99 only 2000 and up, and I think some of the older years. Go to autozone and they will do it for free.

Chris...that does work but I think it only checks your instrument cluster...not the engine codes.

Whenever a check engine light comes on, go to autozone or any other autoparts place. They have code readers that plug into a connector under your dashboard that will read what the engine codes mean. If the reader doesn't describe the code, then simply right down the code number, walk back inside the autoparts store, and pickup a chiltons manual, they have engine codes listed.

If I had to guess, I'd say your engine is pissing and moaning about an exhaust leak from your headers. After 200 miles you are suppose to re-torque the header bolts again.

headers are supposed to have the sensor port for you to plug in the sensors from your old exhaust manifold for the emissions. If you didn't hook them up you will get a code for that. Maybe some states don't require it. Mine does.

help me.dangit, here goes again, i checked codes, an it just said p done, i had earlier pulled positive cable off, to get rid of engine lite, it worked, but i think i shoulda pulled off negative cable, but do i need do go an do that or just drive it a while, it just reads p done an engine light flashes about 12 times an then stays lit till i crank it, previous owner said he put in hypertech program, but control thing is lost, we run truck on mid grade an premium, he only used premium , cause of the program he put in, will it erase the hypertech he programmed in, if i go an pull off negative cable, an or will it recycle computer now, just by what ive done done, this is a load of crap, and a money racket for dealers, .. help, please,, thanx, 2002 r/t dakata , lowered kan n , heavy duty springs, hypertech program, i think,, very fast, trans shifts a bit early an barely slips a bit, but trunk really still screams,, help,,

david ledford - sounds like you cleared any codes before you tried to read them. The hypertech is an aftermarket product that would be unusable (You'd fail many state inspections) if it did throw a code; so that wouldn't be a good way to look for it anyway. I don't understand why you think someone losing an aftermarket mod is a money racket for dealers ? This was not a mopar option, so why blame the dealers ?

anyone want to try this one? truck sat for a year at 60,000 miles with a bad tranny, had a new one put in a few month's ago.Truck did ok for a bit then started bucking and spitting then would be ok for a bit.finally left me on the side of the road.Had it towed to the shop, fella told me there was nothing wrong,(never a good idea to say a truck that was towed in has nothing wrong with it). Then it stopped running completely, put a new fuel pump in it because i couldn't here it come on.Still no run! Plugged it into a diagnostic reader all it said was fail!.tried the onboard thing the odometer said NoBu5.Is this a bad computer or could it be related to a bad ground or the tranny? Any help much appreciated already spent a lot of money

The parking lot at work flooded and I got water in the floor board of my 2000 Sebring. I was able to start it and drive it out and drive it home.It still starts right up but the instrument panel isn't working and the mileage gauge just has the no bus message. Tried the on-off-on-off-on idea but no code showed up. I tried holding the trip meter and turning the key to check the gauges and it went through all the checks but when I start the car all the gauges work for a second and then it goes back to the no bus message. Any ideas?
Thanks-Sylvia

Nobus means at least one electrical component is not comunicating with another - whether due to short, bad ground, open circuit or electrical component failure. In your case it might be a connection that is still wet from the flooding, or it's possible the water may have damaged a component.

I'm on my third Dakota. This one is a 2005, but the "3 on and off" cycle doesn't seem to display the codes on the odometer.

Can you read the codes through the dash ona 2005 Dakota? If so, how? Or do I finally have to break down and spend the dough on a reader?

Thanks!
