Subject: 3.9l Exhaust ?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have just bought a 99 dakota 3.9l sport regular cab and I would like to put dual exhaust on it I was thinking about Flowmaster 50series dynaflow or 70series? Which will give me a v8 like tone with out sounding like a Rice Burner at high rpm's? Also any one have duals on a regular cab that are side exit like on a challanger t/a (in front of the rear wheels)if so was it hard to get installed and lined up correctly ?

If you install tru duals you will kill your torque. The stock sized single exhaust is fine unless you want a blower. Then they recommend 3" single exhaust. On the other hand, a single in /dual out 2 1/2" would probably be ok. I put a 50 series on my 2000 3.9L but I just spliced it into the stock pipes. (For now! Single 2 1/2" stainless pipe off of JBA headers coming soon! Routing the pipe same as stock though, to keep the sleeper effect!) Mine sounds good. I love it. My wife likes it too. It's fun to fire it up in a parking lot full of little Euro cars and show them what an exhaust should sound like!

I agree with cbsdakota. I have the same setup on my '92 Dakota with a 3.9L and it sounds great. When I drive through parking lots where lots of teens with Mustangs and Camaros they turn and look and sometimes stop me and ask what I have under the hood, then when I tell them they look at me with disbelieve. I even sometimes have to show them under the hood to prove it. Many of my friends thought I had a V-8 until they looked. I get comments everyday on how it sounds. I also have seen a slight increase in m.p.g. with this exhaust!

Actually, a 2.5" IN/Dual 2" (or 2.25") OUT is more than plenty for even a mildly hopped up V6. Stay away from the true duals...you will loose bottom end with the V6.

I run 2.5" IN/Dual 2.5" OUT with the blower at 10# and with a 50mm TB...no need for anything more with a normially aspirated V6.

2.5" on the factory systems.

The Delta Flow will be slightly quieter than the standard 50-Series with very neglible losses in performance vs. the standard 50-Series. We've tried both on the Project truck.

I got the Delta Flow because that was the part number Flowmaster gave me for what they recommended. I wish I would have known there was a difference.

BERND: What is the performance difference. You said negligible. If that's true on your truck, I would probably never notice on my practically stock one.

I have a 50 series delta flow single in dual out on my 4.7 and I was very happy with the power gain. Can tell it more on the low end and when pulling something than anywhere. Ran 2 1/2 pipes out back with 3 in tips. According to my phone calls with flowmaster the performance with the 50 delta flow and non delta flow and the 40 delta and non delta are all the same. Just different tones and volume. They said all the delta flow does is reduce the in-cab resonance. My friend got a 40 delta set up the same as mine and there is really no difference in volume his just sounds a little different than mine. At idle you cant really tell the difference.
Bernd, have you found the performance to be any different among them? Would probably be more inclined to go with your numbers.

I stopped by the muffler shop today and got some estimates on new Exhaust. I have a '87 V6 3.9l 4x4 Dak and he said he would just cut the pipe infront of the coverter and weld on 3"pipe to a new coverter, to the 40 series Flowmaster muffler, to 3" chrome tips. $450.00. He said I would get more low and top end power from the new exhuast and a WHOLE LOT BETTER SOUND. I bought my truck from an individual who had just put a new exhaust sys. on it and the guy at the shop said the cat was way to small for my truck. Said that was restricting my performance. Any Comments?

3" is too big. Go KRCPerformance and see what they recommend you put on a MAGNUM V6 with a supercharger: 3" pipe. A pre magnum V6 with 125 horsepower doesn't need 3" pipe. There will be no low end power. Not sure what the stock pipe is on yours but they put 2.5" on MAGNUM's and that's all you could ever need. Look at what Bernd has to say about three posts up. He knows his stuff.

No....3" is way too big for the V6. No more than 2.5" on a single pipe is more than plenty for a stock or mildly modified V6.

On the Supercharged V6's, 2.5" IN and Dual 2.5" OUT...or 3" Single exit.

I was thinking about getting a Flowmaster for my truck and was wondering can i just get the muffler and use the existing factory pipes and stuff for the muffler or should I change the whole thing out. I really don't want to spend a whole lot of money and was wondering how much a muffler with instalation would cost and how much a whole cat-back system with instalation would cost.

I bought a Flowmaster 50 series Delta Flow 2.5" offset/offset and it fit right in place of the stock muffler. Because the stock muffler was longer than the Flowmaster, the Flowmaster couldn't be bolted back in place. But, the tips just touched the stock pipes when held up there so it welded in nicely. The section of exhaust from the muffler back had to be shifted forward about a 1/2" but you wouldn't know unless you watched them do it. I think the exhaust tip moved up a little but like I said it's not noticeable. The truck looks stock which is what I want. Keeps the S10's, Rangers and rice burners from waisting my time!

cbsdakota, you said you get the flowmaster 50 series and you used existing piping, correct? How much did it cost for the muffler and how much (estimated) did it cost for in installation? Have you noticed any performance boost?

The muffler was 89.99 from Summit. The installation was around $60 because I am living in England and had to take it to a British shop that specializes in US cars/trucks. Since there are few places over here to get the work done, they really stick it to you. If you buy a muffler from a muffler shop, they should install for no more than $20. Not sure if it increased the power much by iself. Coupled with the Airaid, I seemed to get more high end power. (And a lot more noise from both!) Of course, they were necessary components when you install any other upgrades. So, even though the gains were small, they will be worth it in the long run.
