Subject: PASSING INSPECTION WHEN YOU CUT THE CAT?

How do you pass the inspection when you cut the catalytic converter? My thought would to hollow out the cat then cut it in half and weld it to the outside of the straight pipe. Any other thoughts?

Just get a good highflow cat that way you dont have to worry about anything at all. I have a carsound and have no problem passing inspection with it and its a great cat., performance wise and sound.

Don't quote me on this, but I think they will be able to tell by the welds. Once they notice the welds, all they would have to do is tap on it to figure out it's hollow.

Don't they test for emissions also? You will probably fail that miserably.

Just the straight pipe through the cat...and no, if they do a sniffer test, you'll most likely fail miserably.

When I did my emissions, 3 cats, I passed and barely registered anything on the meter, so without the third I would assume you would also pass, that is if you have 3, if you only have 1 I doubt you would pass without it.

Why do you need three cats? Wouldn't that reduce power?

The third (Primary) cat is the one that does all the work when the engine is warm. When you take your truck in to get it tested, it's usually warmed up...so where do you think the unburned fuel is going? Out the tailpipe as increased emissions.

The infamous third cat is no thrird cat at all. The third cat is really a resonator. It has nothing to do with emissions. I removed mine today and replaced it with a straight pipe. Before and after emissions test were the same(passed with flying colors). The dodge tech that was working on my truck told me about this mod and showed me the part number for the resonator. It cost me about $40 and two hours to do the whole thing. Twenty bucks was to rent a sawsall. Best money spent on a mod to date.

I guess if you have 3 cats the 3'rd one may not be one at all. If it has no 02 sensors.
My 02 4.7 has one catalytic converter. With 02 sensors before and after.

I've got a Random 3" cat and 3" flowmaster delta flow. Its loud as hell!!! I'd keep the cat on. A little back pressure is a good thing, especially for torque. I bet their's more backpressure in most mufflers than there is in cats anyway.

handi2, if that's the case it would kick as$. I need to go talk to my local Dodge dealer and see if it's called a catalytic converter or a resonator. I could be legal after all...

Did you notice a sound difference w/ the 3rd cat cut off? Also did your low end torque drop off?

just took my first road trip. There is no noticeable dropoff in torque. There is a noticeable gain in midrange hp. Also it is louder at idle and take off but quieter cruising at 80. I'll check gas mileage on the way back but I think it is going to be better.

As posted earlier, my 02 4.7 has one cat located by the tranny. It has 02 sensors before and after. Purchased in Florida.

There seem to be some late model 4.7's with different setups. Some with pre-cats and the 3'rd cat (or resonator it seems). And some with just one.

If you have 3 and the third one has no 02 sensors before and especially after. It probably is not a catalytic convertor at all.

Someone cut one in half and end the mistery.

I noticed no loss at all, if so, it was so tiny it wouldnt make much of a difference, and the tone didnt get necessarily louder, just deeper, meaner if you will, and taht 10 series just makes it sound gorgeous, not for the old or faint of heart
