I have a '92 Dakota with a 3.9L, auto, and 3.55 rear. The stock performance for my truck is outstanding. I once was at my local dealer and one of the servicemen (a fellow 3.9L Magnum owner) asked me if he could drive it. When we got back he had a grine on his face and asked me "what have you done to this truck, it runs like no other 3.9L I have driven". Since then I have put flowmasters and a K&N on the truck and they have been no other modifications from stock, and everyone comments on how it sounds and runs. Many people have asked me if it is a 318 on when I tell them no they not believe me. I sometimes have to raise my hood to prove it. One day I was looking over the original window sticker and it said the engine made 180 horsepower. All others I have seen excluding one other have said 175 (no difference in torque)! What is strange to me it is still able to get between 17 and 21 m.p.g.! So I was wondering has any one else had seen this happen or had this happen?

Thanks to all Dakota owners and fans that make us proud of our trucks!

One proud Dakota owner!

I have also notice that the 92-93 dakotas are rated at 180 hp. I asked a service manager at the local Dodge dealership and he told be that there was someting with the intake manifold design and they also have 3 inch exaust ,until the cat, I own a 92 also and I have added a larger throttle body flowmaster muffler higher flowing injectors and this thing screems for a v6.

My last truck was a 93 v6 reg cab 5spd. I don't think the intake was any different but the exhaust was defiantly 3" all the way back. That thing was incredible stock. I wished in the 9yrs I beat on it I would have taken it to the track. I have a healthy respect for the 3.9.

I have a 92 and love it. I'm not fiscally in a position to start some mods yet but I can't wait. When I had my duals put on the guy mentioned how big the exhaust was, particulary between the cat and muffler, it looked to be just as big as the drive shaft.

When I bought my truck it was actually being driven by the owner of the lot. He loves daks, he thought there was a hole in the exhaust and offered to fix it. It really had a pretty good sound for a stock exhaust, like a very muffled V8, obviously more quiet. He looked at it before delivery and found no hole. If there had been my truck would've had duals straight out of the gate.

The 92-93 Dakotas are the best peforming out of all of the Dakotas i have driven the Gen III with the 3.9l and the R/T and my wife made a comment to me as to what was wrong with the new Dakotas she says they lost performance somewhere down the line. I think this was due to NVH complaints from customers but I thought they were driving a Truck not a Car. As for the 3.9l I love mine I get 19mpg driving at 75mph. I have had a few guys drive mine and the first thing they do is pop open the hood and look to see what is under the hood. I think Dodge really underestimated the HP figures on those years. Seems more close to 200hp for the V-6 and maybe 250 for the 5.2l but this is just my opinion.
