The 340 has a larger bore and shorter stroke then the 360 and breathes better, I had an Aspen R/T that had a 360 and I dropped in a 340 to replace it. I had to put all the smog stuff back on it because of emission testing up here in Connecticut but it pulled a lot harder then the 360.

Yeah the 340 does pull much harder than the 360. Especially a built one.

340`s as far as I remember had a problem with starving a few bearings of oil. Make sure it was built right. Personaly I think you can do a lot more with a 360

What year is the 340? The pre '72 340's were best. The 340 is IMHO the best small block ever made. It has been known to embarrass many big block cars on the dragstrip. The 360 is more of a lower reving torque motor, while the 340 likes to be reved high. As far as the 340 having an oiling problem, I and my father have raced them for years with noting more than a deep pan and a HV/HP pump with aboslutely no bearing problems. The 360s oiling system is the same except for the 360 has larger main journals. The only prob should be the left motormount 318s are different from 340/360s.

is my memory right in that the 89 shelby is really just a warmed over omni 2 door fastback? if it is it would be kinda hard to drop a rear driver into a front drive chassis.

I may be wrong but I think he's talkin about a Shelby Dak. Which I would love to have!
The 318 TB engine in em is pretty weak and that 340 will wake it up quite a bit but plan on going carb'd instead of the stock TB as that setup will starve a 340 of fuel.
You will need a good fuel pressure regulator and a MP electronic conversion kit.

I have a pre mag V8 Im thinkin of droppin in my Dak so I have researched it completely.

Good luck.

Yes 89 Shelby Dakota. If it were a "warmed over
hatchback" it would be in the high 14's stock and in the
12's for $1000 to $1500 more.

340 having bearing problems? I don't think so. Like the 318 and slant six the 340 are just about indestructable. If the 360 was that much better i would have put a 360 fi in my truck instead of the 340. The 340 made 425h 425 ftlb of torque.
